Friday Fix #16...Meet Corinne!

Friday, May 28, 2010

The Friday Fix is a takeover of my Friday blog post by other bloggers who have volunteered their time and energy to "star" in their very own guest post on Friday. Only one mandatory thing - you must answer five of the most random questions I throw your way. The rest is up to you. Remember, if you'd like to be featured on the Friday Fix, shoot me your email, and let me know! So, without further ado, here is Corinne from Lost for Words!

The Most Random Questions in the World...

1. If all the world is a stage, where is the audience?

The audience is sifting through space, sitting on asteroids watching us through telescopes. They may be thinking, "What on earth are they doing?" Other than that, I'm not sure where else they could be hiding. If they were on earth, they would be part of the production, eh?

2. If olive oil comes from crushed olives, how do they make baby oil?

Apparently it comes from almonds... or mineral oil, but I'm sure they are just saying that so as not to cause an uproar. ;) Though, I don't think I'd ever use it if they actually used babies, would you?

3. Can vegetarians safely eat animal crackers?

No animals were harmed in the making of animal crackers. That should be a disclaimer on the box. Maybe vegetarians would eat animal crackers then. But if it's the ideology of them actually thinking the animal cracker represents the animal, then they may not eat them. It's up to that specific vegetarian's discretion then. :)

4. If time heals all wounds, please explain belly buttons to me.

This one stumps me too. Clearly having a cord ripped out (or pardon me--cut off) of your stomach at birth should have healed by now, but I guess it's left there just in case. Maybe the trauma associated with it is just too much for it to heal, and it's a wound that is left there for us to remember where we came from. (Mother's womb that is).

5. Why aren't mustaches called "mouthbrows"?

That's a good question. Why aren't they called mouthbrows? Though, some that I have seen should be called mouth shrubs, etc. I did google this, and found it amusing that someone also mentioned that it was probably the same reason why eyebrows aren't called eyestaches... Case in point?

Linger Review

Thursday, May 27, 2010

I was lucky enough (again) to participate in a blog tour of the novel Linger by Maggie Stiefvater, hosted by Liz from Cleverly Inked.

In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past...and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabel, who already lost her brother to the wolves...and is nonetheless drawn to Cole. At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love--the light and the dark, the warm and the cold--in a way you will never forget.
Taken from GoodReads.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Shiver. It's not that I didn't like the story...I just didn't really think it needed a sequel...at all. I thought the story resolved itself in quite a satisfactory way and, while I love Maggie Stiefvater's writing, I was almost disappointed to see that she'd jumped on the series train with Linger. That said, I was still very excited to have the opportunity to check it out before it ever hit stores.

Linger is written from multiple POVs, including Grace, Sam, and the new wolf in town, Cole. I love the idea of this, and I think it's extremely effective and clever for authors to use this tactic, but I also think voices have to be completely unique when this is done. Yet again, as much as I really enjoyed this story, if I didn't know exactly who was talking, I'd be very confused because the voices were so similar.

Either way, the pace of Linger is steady, flowing, and definitely entertaining. It was a worthy sequel, and while I still didn't love Shiver, I was quite taken by the story of Linger...it is very, very captivating. I give it a 4 out of 5, and I would recommend it to everyone, regardless if you loved Shiver or not!

Please be sure to stay tuned for the next stop on the Linger book tour over at My Overstuffed Bookshelf!

Title: Forget You
Author: Jennifer Echols
Release Date: July 20, 2010

There’s a lot Zoey would like to forget. Like how her father has knocked up his twenty-four-year old girlfriend. Like Zoey’s fear that the whole town will find out about her mom’s nervous breakdown. Like darkly handsome bad boy Doug taunting her at school. With her life about to become a complete mess, Zoey fights back the only way she knows how, using her famous attention to detail to make sure she’s the perfect daughter, the perfect student, and the perfect girlfriend to ultra-popular football player Brandon.

But then Zoey is in a car crash, and the next day there’s one thing she can’t remember at all—the entire night before. Did she go parking with Brandon, like she planned? And if so, why does it seem like Brandon is avoiding her? And why is Doug—of all people—suddenly acting as if something significant happened between the two of them? Zoey dimly remembers Doug pulling her from the wreck, but he keeps referring to what happened that night as if it was more, and it terrifies Zoey to admit how much is a blank to her. Controlled, meticulous Zoey is quickly losing her grip on the all-important details of her life—a life that seems strangely empty of Brandon, and strangely full of Doug.

Catching Fire Review

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules.
Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion.
The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.
Taken from GoodReads.

Oh. My. Gosh. I hardly know where to start on Catching Fire! Ok (deep breaths)...we'll start at the beginning. Katniss and Peeta, despite all odds set against them, survive the Capitol's Hunger Games and must embark on a victory tour of the Districts, forcing them to face their victim's families, while said families must pretend to love, adore, and admire the people who killed their children in the arena. Katniss and Peeta, as well as their mentor, Haymitch, just want the Games to be over. The Capitol, however, does not. The Hunger Games are a reminder of their power, and Katniss and Peeta upset the balance when both of them survived the arena.

Unknowingly, Katniss and Peeta have sparked a rebellion in the Districts, causing President Snow to take notice and prompting him to introduce a twist into the year's Quarter Quell. The tributes will, this time, be drawn from the previous victors of the Hunger Games...the very same victors who have been guaranteed freedom from re-entry ever again. One man and one woman from each District must enter, and there's only one female from District 12. It's inevitable. Katniss and Peeta will fight to the death in the arena again.

I'm going to stop summarizing there because I really, really don't want to give anything away. After I read The Hunger Games, I had to get my paws on Catching Fire ASAP, so I went to the bookstore first thing in the morning. I read it in one day. I couldn't put it down. I felt soooo angry towards the Capitol, and every twist and turn in this book is like a knife in your gut. It's riveting.

I give this book a 5 out of 5, hands down. While some people hate the abrupt endings, I think they're brilliant...they keep you hanging! I can't wait for the third book, Mockingjay, set to release August 24th! I can't wait!

P.S. Have you seen the cover for Mockingjay?!?!

P.P.S. Team Peeta ;)

Monday Movie Review #14 - Iron Man 2

Monday, May 17, 2010

With the world now aware of his dual life as the armored superhero Iron Man, billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) faces pressure from the government, the press, and the public to share his technology with the military. Unwilling to let go of his invention, Stark, along with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side, must forge new alliances -- and confront powerful enemies.
Taken from IMDB.

I enjoyed the first Iron Man. I really did. While the cast, including Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow wasn't that stellar in the first, it was still entertaining, and there was a legitimate plot. This brilliant scientist had an awesome alter-ego, and he wanted to make a difference.

Enter the sequel, Iron Man 2. Frankly, I'm not quite sure where to start with this one. It wasn't bad, but it was definitely a halfhearted sequel. I think with a sophomore release, you really need to step up your game...which this didn't. A lot of the film involved poorly shot fighting scenes, absolutely disgusting bathroom humour, and (honestly) a lack of originality that takes skill to be that unoriginal. That said, it's clear they were setting up a third film, and I really don't think I'll be checking out the next installment.

I give this film a halfhearted 2.5 out of 5 for the boring "adventure." This, of course, is just my opinion, so if you want to run out and see it, feel free! I, however, probably should have waited until the DVD came out.

Purple.

4. Why does minute rice take 15 minutes?

Maybe it means it only takes a minute to eat.... I'm a fast eater.

5. Do caskets come with a lifetime warranty?

Yes. Til you die.

City of Glass Review

Thursday, May 13, 2010

To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters -- never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadow-hunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadow-hunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her new found powers to help save the Glass City -- whatever the cost? Taken from GoodReads.

Sadly, this is the third and final installation of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. City of Glass begins where the previous book, City of Ashes left off, and Clary is desperate to get to Alicante, the city of the Shadowhunters to find her mother's friend, Madeleine because she may be the only one who can save her.

The problem is that Jace believes it's too dangerous for Clary to go with them to Alicante, so he doesn't tell her when and where they'll be leaving. Left to her own devices and left behind, Clary uses her new-found rune powers to create a portal to Alicante, only to realize doing so without permission is punishable by death. Once in the City of Glass, Clary is caught in the final, inevitable battle between the Shadowhunters and Valentine, who is in the final stages of his maniacal plan. Oh, and throw in a few twists for Clary and Jace's relationship, and you've got a recipe for an amazing finish!

I hate when series end. Hate, hate, haaaattteeee it. That said, it's always a plus when the series goes out with a bang, and City of Glass definitely didn't disappoint. I was riveted until the very end. It's a worthy conclusion to this fun and exciting series, and I give it a very strong 4.5 out of 5 because I think there were certain parts that could have been played up more. Oh, and there is a trilogy of prequels releasing this fall, beginning with The Clockwork Angel releasing on August 31, 2010...I can't wait!

In My Mailbox 5/9

Sunday, May 9, 2010

It's been a productive week, though probably not for book blogging. I only received one book this week, and by received, I mean that I bought it. Rather than spend most of my money on books this week, though, I spent it on a show...and it was worth it. Where was I last night? You know, just hanging out with 30 Seconds to Mars, Mutemath, and Neon Trees. Need some proof?

This...

Just singing onstage with the band...

And this...

Let's be honest...you don't read my blog for that nonsense though, so without further ado, this week I received a grand total of one (1) book. It better be worth it, and I'm sure it will be!

1.How do you plan a surprise birthday for a psychic?

They see in the future...so plan it in the past.

2. Do butterflies remember their lives as caterpillars?

Yeah, when they flip through their baby album.

3. Why aren't wiseguys and wisemen the same thing?

Because guys are a bunch of boys that haven't become men yet. It takes being a man to really be wise.

4. Isn't a civil war an oxymoron?

Not if you're really polite when you're killing people. :)

5. If it is true that practice makes perfect, and also true that nobody is perfect, why do we practice?

Hmm because you want to make history and be the first one to get there.

I had so much fun answering these questions! Thanks for having me Melissa! :D

The Hunger Games Review

Thursday, May 6, 2010

Twenty-four are forced to enter. Only the winner survives. In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Each year, the districts are forced by the Capitol to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the Hunger Games, a brutal and terrifying fight to the death - televised for all of Panem to see.

Survival is second nature for sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who struggles to feed her mother and younger sister by secretly hunting and gathering beyond the fences of District 12. When Katniss steps in to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, she knows it may be her death sentence. If she is to survive, she must weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Winning will make you famous. Losing means certain death.
Taken from The Hunger Games UK

Set in a dystopian future of North America, The Hunger Games follows Kat, Peeta, Prim, and the other youth involved in the barbaric sport to remind Panem of the Capitol's power on a yearly basis. Forced into an arena for all of Panem to see, the "tributes" from each district must fight one another for survival. When Prim, Kat's younger sister, is selected though, Kat takes her place without a second thought. To stay alive and to earn sponsors and gifts, Kat forges and unlikely alliance with Peeta, the tribute boy from her district. More than just one thing threatens their alliance...

Ok, I've heard the most amazzzzinnnggg things about this book, but for some reason I just never got around to buying it. I can't believe I waited so long! I am so dumb! I could not put this book down. The concept, the verbiage, the characters...it's terrifyingly realistic, and it truly is one of the most alive books I've ever read. Suzanne Collins created a tangible masterpiece that is as riveting as it is believable.

This is just the first book in the series, with Catching Fire being the next in the series. I can't wait to read it! I give The Hunger Games a 5 out of 5, and I honestly wouldn't change a single thing about it. Oh, and by the way...did you know they're making a movie?!?!??!?! Ahhhhhhh....

Title: Fat Vampire: A Never Coming of Age Story
Author: Adam Rex
Release Date: July 27, 2010

Doug Lee is undead quite by accident—attacked by a desperate vampire, he finds himself cursed with being fat and fifteen forever. When he has no luck finding some goth chick with a vampire fetish, he resorts to sucking the blood of cows under cover of the night. But it’s just not the same.

Then he meets the new Indian exchange student and falls for her—hard. Yeah, he wants to bite her, but he also wants to prove himself to her. But like the laws of life, love, and high school, the laws of vampire existence are complicated—it’s not as easy as studying Dracula. Especially when the star of Vampire Hunters is hot on your trail in an attempt to boost ratings.…
Taken from GoodReads

It's no secret that I'm sick of vampires in novels. I think they tend to be far too similar and mundane these days, and I'm a bit sick of glittering, gorgeous, unattainable undead men. That said, this sounds hilarious, angst-y, relevant, and just a touch sarcastic. I'm interested to see how Adam Rex spins this into a book with a meaning and a purpose.

Monday Movie Review - A Nightmare on Elm Street

Monday, May 3, 2010

While at the Springwood Diner with his girlfriend, Kris Fowles, Dean Russell falls asleep at the table and meets a man covered in burn scars, wearing a red and green sweater and a clawed glove on his hand. The burned man cuts Dean's throat in the dream, but in reality it appears that Dean is cutting his own throat as friend and waitress Nancy Holbrook looks on with Kris. At Dean's funeral, Kris sees a photograph of her and Dean as children, but cannot recall ever knowing Dean before high school. Kris begins to dream about the burned man herself and refuses to go to sleep for fear that she will die in her dreams. Jesse Braun, Kris's ex-boyfriend, shows up at her house to keep her company while she sleeps, but Kris meets the burned man in her dreams and is murdered. Covered in blood, Jesse runs to Nancy's house to try to explain what happened and he learns that Nancy has been having dreams about the same man; that man's name is Freddy.
Taken from IMDB.

Remind me again why I go see horror movies? Oh wait...because I'm a masochist...that explains so much. Anyhoo, A Nightmare on Elm Street is a re-imagining of the classic 1987 slasher flick, something that usually ends up being a flop in the box office. That said, this is one of the first re-made horror films that actually lives up to its potential.

The film is led by an ensemble cast featuring Katie Cassidy, Rooney Mara, Jackie Earle Haley, and Thomas Dekker. The acting in this horror flick was surprisingly good, and while a few of the actors were not-so-believably young in the film, they did very well portraying sympathetic victims. I find that it's hard to feel bad for a lot of the victims in such films these days.

While the film is light on the blood and guts, it's heavy on the panic factor. I'd say most of the audience jumped at least 10 times in the film. The film also explores Freddy's past - something that makes A Nightmare on Elm Street work a lot better. Overall, I give this film a 4 out of 5, but I'd only recommend it to those who enjoy scary movies. The trailer is below.
