Waiting on Wednesday: Ashes to Ashes

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spine, and specifically spotlights upcoming novels we can't wait to read. As always, there are some amazing upcoming books, but this week I'm particularly excited for...

Title: Ashes to Ashes
Author: Melissa Walker (Twitter)
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publish Date: December 23, 2013
Genre: YA, Paranormal
Pages: 356

When Callie's life is cut short by a tragic accident, she expects to find nothingness, or maybe some version of heaven. Instead, her spirit travels to the Prism, an ethereal plane populated by the ghosts she thought were fictional. Here she meets a striking and mysterious ghost named Thatcher, who is meant to guide her as she learns to haunt and bring peace to the loved ones she left behind.

However, Callie uncovers a dark secret about the spirit world: The angry souls who always populate ghost stories are real, dangerous, and willing to do whatever it takes to stay on Earth, threatening the existence of everyone she ever cared about.

As she fights to save them, Callie will learn that while it may no longer beat, her heart can still love-and break.
It's been a while since a paranormal book has intrigued me, and it's been, like, forever since a ghost story has intrigued me. Here's the thing. I'm of the theory that ghosts should be every bit as "human" as possible in stories, without the whole tangible, audible and physical thing. It sounds to me that Ashes to Ashes might just have all that and more. Plus, I'm in the mood for a good love story. This could be the trifecta! What do you think, and what are you waiting on this week?

  1. Wow, I'm not normally intrigued by paranormal either- especially ghost stories, either, but this one sounds fantastic! I like how the MC seems very real despite the fact that she's a ghost. The romance also sounds pretty good, so that makes me very excited for this book! :D

    Thanks for sharing, Melissa! <3

  2. That cover is super pretty and super creepy at the same time. Can't stop staring at it. I usually don't get drawn in by ghost stories either -- I've only ever read one and actually really liked it though. This sounds really good!

    1. Right?! I usually don't like books with simple girls in dresses on the covers, but this one is eerie! Love it :)

  3. Huh, your thoughts on ghosts are interesting. And I would have to agree! The more human, the better. Assuming we're not talking about ghosts to terrify here. Because for me, the best ghosts in paranormal stories are the ones in which you can form an emotional connection towards. Which I guess makes the story all the more tragic. But anyways, this sounds fantastic - and I hadn't heard of it yet! Adding it to GR now, thanks.

I've been so excited about this one since I saw the cover reveal - which I think is SO LOVELY, BTW - and I just LOVE Melissa Walker's work. I'm super excited about this one too, Melissa, and I think it's a great pick for this week! xo

    1. Melanie, I haven't read a good paranormal in almost a year, and I pretty much swore off the genre, but I can't help but be utterly transfixed by this one!

  13. I love the sound of this one and it's been awhile since I read a good ghost story that actually captivates me. I hope this one doesn't disappoint. Great pick!

  14. I can't wait for this one either Melissa! Love the cover, love the blurb, bring on the ghosts! Ghost stories can be really hit or miss with me, but like you said, it sounds like the characters in this one are going to feel very real despite being spirits:)

  15. I really love both the cover and synopsis of this. I also feel like I've read something by this author and enjoyed it, so I need to go back and check. Either way, this is going straight onto my TBR - there are a sad dearth of paranormal novels there at the moment, but this seems really good. :)

  16. I love the sound of this, Melissa! It has been a long time too since the last time I got interested over a ghost-book and this one sounds really great. But the release date is on December?! Ugh! That's quite long. Haha! But thanks for sharing this! This will sure be added on my tbr! :D

  19. Okay, this is a ghost romance story I can get behind and be excited for! I'm always weary of ghost/human romances because how can they end well? This is a romance between spirits, so this could have a happy ending! Yes! Also, I love dark and dangerous stories mixed in with my romance reads and this sounds lovely! This is going in the TBR! December is not too far off. Great pick, Melissa. :)

  22. I really liked Walker's summer book last year so I'm excited for more of her writing; additionally ghosts are one of my favorite paranormal creatures so I think this could be a real winner.
