Waiting on Wednesday: Vitro

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spine, and specifically spotlights upcoming novels we can't wait to read. As always, there are some amazing upcoming books, but this week I'm particularly excited for...

Title: Vitro
Author: Jessica Khoury (Twitter)
Publisher: Razorbill
Publish Date: January 14, 2014
Genre: YA, Sci-Fi
Pages: 400

On a remote island in the Pacific, Corpus scientists have taken test tube embryos and given them life. These beings--the Vitros--have knowledge and abilities most humans can only dream of. But they also have one enormous flaw.

Sophie Crue is determined to visit Skin Island and find her mother, a scientist who left Sophie behind years ago. She enlists hunky charter pilot Jim Julien to take her there. But once on the island, Sophie and Jim encounter more than they bargained for, including a charming, brilliant Vitro named Nicholas and an innocent, newly awoken one named Lux.

In a race for their lives, Sophie and Jim are about to discover what happens when science stretches too far beyond its reach.
So, I've had a bit of a thing for stories of people with powers since, well, forever. Naturally, Vitro fits that bill, and if you've been a follower of this blog for a while, you'll know that yours truly also has a bit of a penchant for sci-fi. Score annnnd double score. In all seriousness though, I like the play on words in the title of this novel, I enjoyed Ms. Khoury's first novel, Origin, and I'm pretty sure I could devour all 400 pages in one sitting. What do you think, and what are you waiting on this week?

  1. I enjoyed this author's first novel as well, and it's really interesting that she's keeping up with similar themes. I love a good sci-fi novel, and with a gorgeous cover like that, who could ever resist?! And that play on words is quite nice, haha. ;)

    Thanks for sharing, Melissa! <3

  7. This sounds so good! Books seem more realistic when Science is the Bad Guy. It's like zombies...totally possible. ;) I have Origin sitting on my shelves, so I'm definitely bumping it up on my TBR.

    1. I love it when a book tackles science vs. creation, you know? I'm devoutly religious, but I sure love me some controversy haha

  13. I still need to read Origin! I feel like I say that way too often - "I need to read this or that". I just need someone to pay me to read all day and run the blog, wouldn't that be nice? Though of course then it would likely feel like work and I'd lose interest. Dammit. I'm so hard to please ;-)

  18. This one sounds to me a little like The Mad Scientist's Daughter, though that was a historical book and this appears to be current/future. But this creepy science stuff is definitely compelling. Thanks for putting this one on my radar!

  19. This sounds like a great pick! I love a bit of Scifi! Gosh... I can't believe we are starting to preview books for next winter.. Yikes. I feel like winter hasn't left yet. Still waiting on summer in the Pacific NW.

  20. I thought Origin was good, but not great. I really wanted it to be more focused on other events than the romance, so I doubt I'll pick this up but I do love the cover and I hope you enjoy this one as much - if not more - than you liked Origin! :)

  21. Stories about people with powers are usually awesome, so I'm excited for VITRO!

  24. I haven't read Origin, but I'm with you on loving what Vitro has to offer! Because I love me some sci fi. And some superpowers. But two in one? Now, that's what'll make this one a fantastic, unputdownable book, I think. Exciting!! Can't wait to read some early reviews for this one.

  25. This cover is so pretty-I'm eager to start seeing reviews to see if this SF is up my alley.
