Fantasy, my friends, is on the rise. While it's kind of a hit or miss sort of genre for me, when it's done really well, I tend to fawn over the book for years - much like I do for sci-fi novels. I honestly love worlds that abound with witches, wizards, magic, other realms and dark creatures bent on vengeance. So, naturally, when I find a book that piques my interest, you'd better believe it becomes a future favourite immediately!

The city of Bryre suffers under the magic of an evil wizard. Because of his curse, girls sicken and disappear without a trace, and Bryre’s inhabitants live in fear. No one is allowed outside after dark.Yet night is the only time that Kymera can enter this dangerous city, for she must not be seen by humans. Her father says they would not understand her wings, the bolts in her neck, or her spiky tail—they would kill her. They would not understand that she was created for a purpose: to rescue the girls of Bryre.Despite her caution, a boy named Ren sees Kym and begins to leave a perfect red rose for her every evening. As they become friends, Kym learns that Ren knows about the missing girls, the wizard, and the evil magic that haunts Bryre. And what he knows will change Kym’s life.
Monstrous is supposedly reminiscent by the tales of the Brothers Grimm, as well as Frankenstein, which has me positively salivating over it. There seems to be this beautiful blend of rich drama, fantastic creatures and an overarching story of good vs. evil - all of which speaks to my soul. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the cover is simply to die for. It says this one is good for the upper middle-grade crowd, as well, but so was Harry Potter, so I'm hardly concerned. Sign me up! What do you think, and what are you waiting on this week?
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature from Jill at Breaking the Spine.
THIS BOOK. I waited on it last week and I'm so cheating on my TBR with it because I don't think I can resist. It just sounds so good and it has THAT COVER and I hope it's fantastic.

I am so excited for this novel too, Melissa! I love fantasy and I usually have fantastic luck with Middle Grade so I really want to read this. Plus, look at that cover!
ReplyDeleteOh, I saw this on Edelweiss the other day and the cover immediately caught me eye, along with the fairy tale aspect. Lovely pick Melissa!
ReplyDeleteAwesome pick! This is new to me, but I like the sound of it. I am a big fan of Brothers Grimm and Frankenstein, so I will have to add this to my TBR list.
ReplyDeleteOooo reminiscent of the Brothers Grimm you say? YES PLEASE! Normally I stay away from MG, but you're absolutely right, Harry Potter started with an MG label as well and a good story will appeal to all age groups. Definitely looking forward to this Melissa!
ReplyDeleteI don't typically read MG novels, but I'm definitely willing to give this a shot. The cover is so adorable! :)
ReplyDeleteYep! I'm in on this one as well - I can't resist it with the Brother's Grimm, Frankenstein and that adorable girl on the cover going on for it. I love to escape with MG books, as well as and often read them with my daughters. But, truthfully, I'm just going to read this for me, it sounds awesome, right?! :)
ReplyDeleteAww this is a pretty neat pick Melissa, I'm definitely a fan of the cover, and although I don't read as much MG as I used to, I am certainly intrigued by this book!
ReplyDeleteI have been reading a bit more MG as of late and have been reminded of how amazing it can be!
ReplyDeleteI have Monstrous in my wish list already! It sounds great! Great pick, Melissa!
This looks amazing, especially the cover! Thanks for putting this on my radar, Melissa!
ReplyDeleteThat's new to me! Sounds very intriguing! My interest is piqued! Hope you enjoy it once you get it!

I love that cover. It's adorable. And this sounds really good!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I'm not a fan of the cover but I do love the synopsis and this seems incredibly promising. I hope the story itself winds up being as good as it sounds! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't usually pick up middle grade but this is tempting. I love creepy! Great choice, Melissa! :)
