City of Glass Review

Thursday, May 13, 2010

To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters -- never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadow-hunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadow-hunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her new found powers to help save the Glass City -- whatever the cost? Taken from GoodReads.

Sadly, this is the third and final installation of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. City of Glass begins where the previous book, City of Ashes left off, and Clary is desperate to get to Alicante, the city of the Shadowhunters to find her mother's friend, Madeleine because she may be the only one who can save her.

The problem is that Jace believes it's too dangerous for Clary to go with them to Alicante, so he doesn't tell her when and where they'll be leaving. Left to her own devices and left behind, Clary uses her new-found rune powers to create a portal to Alicante, only to realize doing so without permission is punishable by death. Once in the City of Glass, Clary is caught in the final, inevitable battle between the Shadowhunters and Valentine, who is in the final stages of his maniacal plan. Oh, and throw in a few twists for Clary and Jace's relationship, and you've got a recipe for an amazing finish!

I hate when series end. Hate, hate, haaaattteeee it. That said, it's always a plus when the series goes out with a bang, and City of Glass definitely didn't disappoint. I was riveted until the very end. It's a worthy conclusion to this fun and exciting series, and I give it a very strong 4.5 out of 5 because I think there were certain parts that could have been played up more. Oh, and there is a trilogy of prequels releasing this fall, beginning with The Clockwork Angel releasing on August 31, 2010...I can't wait!

  1. Yay!!! I'm glad you liked it! I'm sad this series has ended to, although there will be a 4th book from Simon's POV coming out next year!

I just love Jace's wit. I'm going to miss his smart-aleck comments

  3. Yea its not a trilogy anymore. The fourth books, City of Fallen Angels comes out in March 2011. It's majority Simon's POV but everyone is still in it, so more Jace and Clary and Magnus and everyone we LOVE!

I'm super excited. And yes I am very excited for Clockwork Angel too. It's the book I want most this year!

  5. I've been wanting to get into this series. I know what you mean, on one hand I hate when a series ends and on the other I love it when things don't have to end in a cliffhanger and you have to wait until the next book. Guess, I'm never happy. :D
