Linger Review

Thursday, May 27, 2010

I was lucky enough (again) to participate in a blog tour of the novel Linger by Maggie Stiefvater, hosted by Liz from Cleverly Inked.

In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past...and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabel, who already lost her brother to the wolves...and is nonetheless drawn to Cole. At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love--the light and the dark, the warm and the cold--in a way you will never forget.
Taken from GoodReads.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Shiver. It's not that I didn't like the story...I just didn't really think it needed a sequel...at all. I thought the story resolved itself in quite a satisfactory way and, while I love Maggie Stiefvater's writing, I was almost disappointed to see that she'd jumped on the series train with Linger. That said, I was still very excited to have the opportunity to check it out before it ever hit stores.

Linger is written from multiple POVs, including Grace, Sam, and the new wolf in town, Cole. I love the idea of this, and I think it's extremely effective and clever for authors to use this tactic, but I also think voices have to be completely unique when this is done. Yet again, as much as I really enjoyed this story, if I didn't know exactly who was talking, I'd be very confused because the voices were so similar.

Either way, the pace of Linger is steady, flowing, and definitely entertaining. It was a worthy sequel, and while I still didn't love Shiver, I was quite taken by the story of Linger...it is very, very captivating. I give it a 4 out of 5, and I would recommend it to everyone, regardless if you loved Shiver or not!
