Top Ten Tuesday: The Best Sequels Ever

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. The feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists over at The Broke and the Bookish.

Each week they will post a new top ten list that one of our bloggers at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All they ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It's a great way to get to know your fellow bloggers.

The Top Ten Book Sequels Ever

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling - I dare you to tell me this isn't the best book in the whole series. I dare you. But seriously...does it get better than this? It has Sirius!

2. Frostbite by Richelle Mead - I swore up and down when I started this blog that I would never read this series. Well, I did...and I loved it. This book made me certain the series would continue to work for me.

3. The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman - Say what you want about the religious connotions of this series, but I love it. This novel (and the series as a whole) is such an outstanding example of fine literary work.

4. Mossflower by Brian Jacques - This series will always remain a favourite of mine, and this novel made it all worthwhile. Though it's a sequel, it's more of a prequel, and it really builds the series.

5. City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare - I must admit that I stopped reading the series after I was disappointed with book three BUT book two was solid gold in my opinion.

6. Insurgent by Veronica Roth - It is so hard to really nail a second installment in a series and beat that sophomore slump. This book really managed to up the ante and further my investment in the series.

7. The Scorch Trials by James Dashner - All I'm saying is that if you haven't read this series, you are totally missing out. Book one was awesome. Book two was epic. Book three was mind-blowing.

8. Never Have I Ever by Sara Shepard - I wasn't a fan of the Pretty Little Liars series (love the show, not the books). This series, however, just gets more and more fun as we go!

9. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins - I loved The Hunger Games, so when I read this book, I was pretty sure it wouldn't live up. What do you know? It rocked. It was even better than book one.

10. The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan - I know this is middle grade. So sue me. Tell me where else you're going to get an epic, fun and enticing series about Greek mythology that keeps getting better.

  1. I loved Frostbite. But it's really the third book in that series that made me fall in love. Shadow Kissed. The ending of that one was the best.

    1. Shadow Kissed was great, too. Well, frankly, the whole series rocked, didn't it?!

  2. Finally someone else whose favorite HP book is Order of the Phoenix! Most people seem to dislike this book the most and I don't get it. I really, really like it.

And I agree about Catching fire. I found it even better than THG :)

    1. YES! Mel, it's by far the best in the entire series. It's so sad, but it's SO complex. Ahhh

  3. Melissa, Order of the Phoenix IS the best in the series! Deathly Hallows is great, but nothing tops the complexity of OotP for me!(: I'm so thrilled to see The Subtle Knife on here, not to mention City of Ashes, Insurgent, Catching Fire, and Sea of Monsters - all faves of mine too! Wonderful list!

    1. Thank you for seeing the light with me! OotP is by far the most in-depth, and it has Sirius, so how can it go wrong? And you know me and the HDM series. Sold.

  4. Love your list! Agree with Catching Fire and I want to start a Philip Pullman book. The cat on the cover had me sold..a bit. Thanks for sharing!

    1. It's an awesome series! A lot of people dislike it for its atheist references, but I read it and disregard all that :)

  5. Nice picks!! Really, really do not know why I didn't think to pick "other" sequels. Like the 4th book in a series. Guess I had it in my head at first thought that the sequel would be second book only! Oh well!

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  6. It's a serious challenge to find good sequels, especially from trilogies but I'm thinking that you definitely did it! Insurgent was fantastic and I really did enjoy The Scorch Trials (though I still liked the first one best).

    1. It really is, isn't it?! I usually avoid series these days, but seriously...all of these really worked for me :)

  7. The VA series is one of those series that got better with the book. The third book was probably my favorite out of all the books.
I didn't like Insurgent as much as Divergent, but it was a good sequel.
I haven't read Sara Shephard's new series, but it sounds fun.
One of my favorite sequel is Dark Triumph by R.L LaFevers.
    Great list, Melissa.

    1. I totally agree with you on VA, Nick. I think it's a series I greatly underestimated, and I ended up being so pleasantly surprised by it!

  9. I agree with your list and Catching Fire :) I still need to read Vampire series lol

  10. Frostbite is definitely on my list. I didn't love the first book, but that one got me hooked. Also it had Adrian. <3

  11. There are seriously so many books on here that I still need to read! I am so bad at continuing with books in a series. I started the VA series recently, I've only read the first two books yet, but everyone says that the series gets better as the series progresses! Once again another great list Melissa!

  12. I haven't read Insurgent yet, how much do I suck? I was so nervous to read it after loving Divergent and then I think everyone said there's a big cliffhanger, so I just kept putting it off. I'm going to keep doing so until Allegiant is out and then I can just read them both together:) So glad Frostbite made your list, I love that one!

  13. How did I forget HP&tOotP (that's my favorite HP book too, even if my favorite character dies at the end) and Frostbite!?! Those are excellent sequels! The Sea of Monsters was great, too.

    Fabulous choices!

  14. I completely agree about Frost Bite! I wasn't interested in reading the series at all, but I decided to give it a chance. I liked but didn't love the first book, but I'm so glad I continued it because DANG! I was hooked after book two!

  15. yay! great list! glad to see Percy Jackson on here. and high five for OotP & Catching Fire. I will finally be reading Insurgent next week, can't wait. ~daphne

  16. I think that The Deathly Hallows is the best HP book. ;P Although I do understand you. The Order of the Phoenix is my second favorite HP book for sure (and I love Sirius and that one scene broke my heart). But what can I say? I'm a sucker for well-done, epic endings.
And yes! I feel the same way about Pullman's His Dark Materials series. So very good. And it's not strictly religious per se...he rewrites Christianity in a new way and applies it to his fantasy world and it works and is just awesome.
