Top Ten Tuesday: Literary Classics I've Loved

Tuesday, July 1, 2014

I'm all about reading young adult these days, but that's not to say that I haven't read my fair share of the classics - or other genres, for that matter. I think the beauty of books is that there is just so much to choose from, and we have the opportunity to pick what does and doesn't work for us. While I only review young adult novels, I have to say that much of my literary tastes has been induced by classics that I've discovered long past. Here are the top ten that I've read - and loved - throughout my life.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature from The Broke and the Bookish.

  1. Wow. I haven't read a single classic. What a reader, I am! I would love to read the LoTR books, though, including The Hobbit. And Little Women! Great list, Melissa.

  3. Awesome picks….we have some of the same ones. You can't go wrong with P&P or TKAM! I forgot about The Little Prince. I love that one…I had an excerpt read at my wedding.

  5. OMG. Had to read Le Petit Prince in French 2 and I *hated* it. Mostly because we were supposed to read it, well, in French and I wasn't great at it.

  6. I normally struggle with classics Melissa (I've been scarred for life by Crime & Punishment. Just no.), but the ones you listed above are ones I've really loved as well. I remember reading way ahead on Fahrenheit 451 and To Kill a Mockingbird, two of the very few times I did that in school! I just had to know what happened:)

  8. I love the classics, although lately, like you I've been sticking to YA. I definitely need to read more classic literature! You have picked so many of my favorites, especially Pride and Prejudice, The Great Gatsby, and The Hobbit! I still need to read Little Women and Grapes of Wrath, and they're both on my list today. I'm glad you enjoyed them! Great picks, Melissa! :D

  10. Loved TGG, TKaM, LotF, TGoW and the Hobbit! I still need to finish Pride and Prejudice - I've been reading and setting that book aside for years! It's kind of embarrassing.

    Fabulous top ten!!

  11. I read most of these in school, but I was one of the few who didn't really enjoy them. Or many of the reads that were forced upon us.

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  12. Le Petit Prince is one of those books that I've re-read so many times! What a wonderful book!!
The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings I read right before the movies came out, but I've re-read them like 3 times already!

  13. We read Le Petit Prince in my high school French class, and I loved it. I'd love to read it again sometime. I finally read The Grapes of Wrath a couple years ago. It wasn't bad, but if I were recommending a Steinbeck book, it would still have to be East of Eden.

  14. THANK YOU for being the first person that I've seen today to put The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck on your list! It is my alltime favorite - I love all of the work of Steinbeck that I've read so far. That makes me so happy!

  15. I love The Hobbit, The Secret Garden, The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Fahrenheit 451. I have every intention of reading The Lord of the Flies and Little Women soon. Great list, Melissa!
And I definitely agree - one of the perks of being a reader is having so many types of stories opened up to us. :)

  16. Yay for Pride & Prejudice and Little Women! They both made my list. Haha, I'm afraid To Kill A Mockingbird and Lord of the Flies both made my least favourite classics list XD

  17. I've read all of these titles, with the exception of Grapes of Wrath and The Little Prince, but I want to read them both. I'm so glad you've enjoyed them, Melissa, and I love the other classics you picked for this post. Wonderful list! :)

  18. I think the older we get the more appreciation we have for P&P, especially after Lizzie Bennet Diaries came out XD Out of these, I've only read Little women, P&P of course and Secret Garden, but I do have my appreciation of classics too :)
