Waiting on Wednesday: A Wicked Thing

Fairy tales are my jam, people. There's something about reading those stories that we read when we were little and seeing them come to life in all new ways that really gets the literary lover in me going. I like to think, too, that the magic is still alive, so seeing them portrayed in new ways, new lights and new times gives me great joy. Plus, something about it is just a beautiful breath of fresh air. Colour me sold on all fairy tale retellings.

Title: A Wicked Thing
Author: Rhiannon Thomas (Twitter)
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publish Date: February 24, 2015
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Pages: 352

One hundred years after falling asleep, Princess Aurora wakes up to the kiss of a handsome prince and a broken kingdom that has been dreaming of her return. All the books say that she should be living happily ever after. But as Aurora understands all too well, the truth is nothing like the fairytale.

Her family is long dead. Her “true love” is a kind stranger. And her whole life has been planned out by political foes while she slept. Everyone expects Aurora to marry her betrothed and restore magic and peace to the kingdom before revolution tears it apart. But after a lifetime spent locked in a tower for her own safety, Aurora longs for the freedom to make her own choices. When she meets a handsome rebel, he tempts her to abandon everything for a different kind of life.

As Aurora struggles to make sense of her new world, she begins to fear that the curse has left its mark on her, a fiery and dangerous thing that might be as wicked as the witch who once ensnared her. With her wedding day drawing near, Aurora must make the ultimate decision on how to save her kingdom: marry the prince or run.
First of all, this book is releasing on my birthday, so it has to be amazing. Second of all, Sleeping Beauty was by far my favourite fairy tale growing up, as evidenced by my watching Maleficent three times. There's something about the idea of a Sleeping Beauty that wants a little bit more; an Aurora that might put her own needs first above her own kingdom. I'm intrigued, and I'm totally in love with this cover (even despite hating the pretty girls in dresses trend). Sign me up, people! I'm sold! What do you think, and what are you waiting on this week?

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature from Jill at Breaking the Spine.

  2. I'm beyond excited for this one! I can tell that it's going to be a thrilling and exciting read. I also like how Aurora seems to be much braver than the fairy tale Aurora.
    Lovely pick, Melissa! :)

  5. I love the tale of Sleeping Beauty as well but I have to admit the Prince and the Rebel sound like a recipe for a love triangle. I hope this book doesn't steer down that path as it seems incredibly promising otherwise. Lovely pick, Melissa--thanks for putting this on my radar!(:

  6. I'm completely excited about A WICKED THING! I love a good re-telling with a twist as well. I'm not sure if I've read one on the after the HEA with a Sleeping Beauty take. I have this up as well today - and I'm loving that cover as well, Melissa :)

  11. This one looks awesome! I love fairy tale retellings, and I love the unexpected twist with this one. It definitely sounds interesting. And, Maleficent was an AMAZING movie so I completely understand watching it over and over. Great post! :D

  12. This was my WoW pick for the other week! Love the idea of getting into Aurora's head after she wakes up from her sleeping curse and realizes what's going in her life now. I like the backdrop of the cover (looks kinda like a semi-dilapidated castle should) but I'm not crazy about yet another girl in a pretty dress lying down somewhere, lol. Still, definitely looking forward to this one!

  13. Ooh, I hadn't heard of this and whilst I don't really like people on book covers, I think this sounds promising! Definitely promising! Sleeping Beauty has become a favourite fairytale of mine in recent years, so I'm really excited about reading more retellings of it and seeing how other people mix up the story! I'm going to add this to my tbr and see if it is as wonderful as it might quite possibly promise to be! Thank you for sharing!
