Top Ten Tuesday: Books I'm Not Sure I Want to Read

Tuesday, August 12, 2014

It might just be me, but there are some books that I've had on my shelf that, for whatever reason, I just can't seem to bring myself to read them. More often than not, it's because I'm afraid I'll be the sole person that won't enjoy them. Or, alternatively, they're those series that you loved, but you're afraid maybe dragged on a little bit too long. Then, there's the ones that reviewers simply shot down and made me too wary to even start them. They're rare, but they're there, and like it or not…there are a bunch of books on my shelf that I've yet to read…here are just ten of them.

As an aside, I love this series. Is it the best written? No, but it sure is entertaining. Here's the thing though…I got closure with the third book. I'm not sure I can go any further.

Forever by Maggie Stiefvater - I read the first two books, but I'm one of the few that didn't enjoy this series.
Elixir by Hilary Duff - I hear that she had a ghostwriter write the entire thing, and that ruined it for me.
Embers & Echoes by Karsten Knight - While I enjoyed the first book, I wasn't sold enough to continue on.

Lola & the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins - I loved Anna…what if this one doesn't live up?
Shut Out by Kody Keplinger - I'm one of the few that didn't like The Duff. I worry this might follow suit.
Hunger by Michael Grant - I enjoyed Gone, but I'm not sure I loved it enough to read on.
Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout - With a fan following like this, what if I'm the only one that hates it?

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature from The Broke and the Bookish.

  1. You're the only other person who feels the same way I do about the last three books in Clare's series. The ending to CITY OF GLASS was so perfect.

  2. I agree about the TMI series. It just seems to keep going but I don't feel the need to continue.
I read Shiver but just couldn't get into it. I keep getting told the series gets even better but the first one just didn't do anything for me so I'm not sure I want to even give the second book a shot. And here I thought I was the only one that wasn't dazzled by the series.
Lola was cute...not as wonderful as Anna, but cute and didn't damper my excitement for Isla.
Obsidian was another one I only felt 'okay' about. I'll probably give the next one a shot...maybe.

  3. Shut Out is honestly not my favorite of Keplinger's. If you weren't 100% sold on The DUFF, I'd suggest trying A Midsummer's Nightmare first, and then circling back to Shut Out if that goes well for you.

  4. I haven't read any of the books in the Mortal Instruments series, but I've been hearing so many things about it that I feel obligated to. I feel the exact same way as you do with Lola, but you have to! I haven't heard a single bad thing about it yet.

  5. I know how you feel about TID. The third one was so good and then the fourth one just wasn't as good and now I am putting off the rest of them.

  6. Woops ment TMI. I always get them mixed up.

  7. I haven't read any of these. I've heard really great things about Anna and the French Kiss. I'm beginning to think I should read it!

  8. I loved The Duff but then I tried A Midsummer's Nightmare and..and it was awful. I was really disappointed and now I don't want to try Shut Out. :( I'm worried about Cassandra Clare's books too! I've read the first 2 TMI books, but they're so long and I do tend to get bored when the plot waffles all over the place. Still. I need to know how it ends. ;)

  9. Let's see... I feel the same way that you do about Claire's Mortal Instrument's series, I was quite happy with the ending. I love the Wolves of Mercy Falls series (even if the ending in Forever left me wanting) and I have to read Sinner soon. Lola is very good, you should try it and besides you get to see Anna and St. Clair again :) Obsidian was really good, but I haven't continued with the series (yet). Great list!

  10. LOL! There are always those books, aren't there? I have a shelf full of books I need to read but I'm just not sure I want to and, yes, TMI is on it. They're just so big and it's such an investment of time... *sigh*

  11. Shut Out is really good, Melissa. I think you should definitely give it a shot. As far as Lola goes, I'm certain you would love it. :)
Obsidian is one of those books that everyone and their mother loved, but I personally wasn't a fan of. I think you should try it out. Maybe, it will surprise you! :)

  12. I read book 4 of The Mortal Instruments but then stopped, I just wanted to imagine the happy ending that was implied at the end of book 3 and not read as Jace and Clary were put through the wringer yet again.

And while Lola wasn't as good as Anna for me, it was still a fun read, I think you'll enjoy it Melissa. It's almost Isla time, so you can binge read them both:)

  13. I've seen Cassandra Clare on so many lists! I tried reading one of her books (can't remember which) and I couldn't get into it. I did read Obsidian and I recommend staying away. Thanks for sharing!

  14. I loved Lola. It was different from Anna which made it just as good even though I'm not sure I loved the characters quite as much as the first book. I recommend you try it because it is still one of my favourite YA contemporary romances!

  15. I completely understand where you're coming from. I felt like The Mortal Instruments series ended well with the first three books, and I didn't want the trilogy to continue. I can tell you that it kind of has gone downhill since then. And I also didn't like Shiver, so I didn't continue on with that series. Great picks!

  16. I didn't love LOLA AND THE BOY NEXT DOOR as much as ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS, but it's still good! The Wolves of Mercy Falls had its flaws, but the writing and story are just so good that I think you should read FOREVER. I love the Gone series, and you should totally read HUNGER, if only so you can make it to LIGHT, which is one of the best series finales I've read.

  17. I have Lola sitting on my shelf because I feel the same exact way. I read shiver actually liked it, but I have this problem where I read the ending first with some books and I read the end of Forever and don't want to continue.

I didn't want to read obsidian either, but then it was free on amazon and I bought it because what was there to lose? And I ended up loving it. Im really glad I read it.

  18. I feel like a lot of people didn't really enjoy the Shiver series. I liked it. Although for the life of me I can't remember what happened now since it's been years, but I liked it at the time and that's all I remember! And I naturally love Obsidian too but can understand the fear of reading a loved series and then you can't get into it. It's a lot of pressure. I tried Cinder and felt meh, but since the author is coming to my town in October I thought I would give it one more try before being totally done.

I would recommend reading Obsidian though! The heroine is a book blogger and that was something that I just loved about her!

  19. I really loved both Forever and Lola and while I enjoyed Shut Out I think you can probably skip it. I also skipped the rest of TMI series--I liked the ending of CoG just fine.

  20. I wasn't super into the Linger series either and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one! I only read the first.

  21. I totally gave up with The Mortal Instruments series after book three, I'm glad to know that I wasn't the only one who felt compelled into continuing with this series, there are a lot of series actually where I've felt like these books could have been wrapped up ages ago! And hooray I'm not the only black sheep who didn't enjoy Stiefvater's Shiver series, I also stopped reading after book two too! I do hope that you give Lola a try though, I immensely loved Anna, but still thoroughly enjoyed Lola! Great list Melissa! :)

  22. Lola was different but I also loved it, as you saw on my review, so I'd say read it!
As for Obsidian... it was a lot of fun book, and though I didn't love Daemon at first, the humour in the book was fantastic!
And as for the Mortal Instruments... well Melissa, I have to say that I wasn't too keen on the 4th book but the last book was brilliant and made the continuation of the series well worth reading!

  23. I loved Lola and think that you'd enjoy it if you loved Anna :) The characters are different, but the humor and fun, quirky characters are still there. Plus, Anna and Etienne make a guest appearance!

  24. Don't worry, I hated Obsidian as well because it was WAY too similar to the plot of Twilight for me, and I found that offensive. I think I'd put the whole COB series on this list myself, I've only read the first 2 books and it seems to go on forever. That makes me wonder how many authors ghost write though.

  25. TMI was over for me after the third book as well. I was just done with the series.. I wasn't blown away by Obsidian, but thought it was an enjoyable book.

  26. I think I only read the first book in the Mortal Instruments series, so I can't really consider myself to be a fan. But I'm indignant for the fans of the series. It's not okay to end a series and then just decide "my bad, I'm going to write more." Not cool. If I were you, I'm sure I wouldn't continue past the third book either.
As a general rule, I refuse to read celebrity authored books. I'm sure they're all technically written by ghostwriters and that's just not cool in my mind.
Aw, I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy The DUFF. I enjoyed it myself, and I've been meaning to read more Keplinger. I'm not sure which of her books is considered the strongest, though. It might be A Midsummer's Nightmare?
And I feel the same way about Obsidian! I just got the free Kindle version of the book, but I'm not sure whether or not I'll actually read it haha. There's the legion of fans to consider, as well as the fact that it's not my typical type of preferred book.

  27. Nooooooo! I really hope Hilary Duff does not have a ghostwriter. =/ that will break my heart.
Obsidian is soooooooo good. I have not read the rest of the series because I fail at life, but girl. I think you would love it.
