Let's Talk: Favourite Book Series

Friday, March 16, 2012

Let's Talk is a new weekly feature here at i swim for oceans. I think it's important that we all have our say, and there's something to be said for raising our voices. Simply put, here on the little old blog, I like to host some of my very own discussion posts because, well, I like to converse with you all.

And so, Let's Talk will feature questions or prompts, which I will answer, too. Love it or hate it, weigh in or don't, it's my hope that Let's Talk will at least get you thinking...and maybe even get you discussing with the rest of us!
Question: What series do you absolutely love, or can't get of?

Alright kiddos, you probably saw this one coming. It's my go-to! What can I say?! I have a bit of an aversion to series, as a whole, these days, but there are always those standouts that make me reconsider. Now, before I tell you what series I love, let me explain my aversion to series. I find that, too often, it feels like a cop-out. Series are so predominant these days that I almost want more stand alone novels. I think there are series (in my humble opinion) that should have stopped with book one...like Shiver. So sue me...I stand by it!

However, there are plenty of series that prove me wrong though, and there are series that will always stand apart for me both together and separately. By that, I mean I would be completely content to read one part of the series and rest well at night. Would I still want the next book? Sure, but I would survive because that book was so brilliant. So, my friends, without further ado - the series I simply can't get enough of:

Need I say more?

Really though...

Favourite book = The Order of the Phoenix.

Favourite character = Sirius Black.

Favourite moment = Dumbledore & the Mirror of Erised.

Yes, I'm excited for the movie...

But I will always love the books more.

Favourite book = The Hunger Games.

Favourite character = Finnick Odair.

Favourite moment = Madge gives Katniss the Mockingjay pin.

I'm always finding new series, so I'm sure I'll have to add some to my list eventually, but for now, I'm sorry, those are my top two. If I had to list more, however, I'd need to add the upcoming the Mara Dyer series, all of the Redwall books and His Dark Materials. I'm the world's biggest geek!

  2. You know Melissa, I have a ton of series that I love that aren't finished yet, so I didn't count them. I bet if you asked this a year from now I could do another post with some fresh answers! But I bet HP would be on most lists. I can't pick a favorite moment, but I do love Hermione. And I loved Finnick too from THG.

LOVE this question. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

  7. Finnick? What an interesting choice! He really was an awesome character. The Chaos Walking trilogy will always be one of my all-time favorites. And I have just got to read Mara Dyer!

  9. Vampire Academy is one of my all time faves. I got into it late, but then ended up reading all six books in the space of two weeks or so. Also love The Body Finder series, and I can see Mara Dyer becoming a favourite too!

  11. I love the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.  I also love the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris.  Yes, the is a trendy one these days, what with True Blood and all.  However, I started reading this series around the time the 3rd book was published, which was long before True Blood was a household phrase.  And Charlaine has stayed true to the characters, not changing situations to better fit the HBO show.

  14. I was just thinking how my reading pattern these days always revolve around series. You're right, they're predominant, when sometimes they don't need to be. Or when it's ends in a trilogy, and lo and behold, a statement saying that the series is extended. It bugs me.

But yeah, most series are really good, and worth the read. You mentioned two of may favorites, and I'll add Vampire Academy and Gemma Doyle.

As long as there's a story to be told, and not just a sting to tug in the cash and needless popularity.

    Great topic!

  16. There is only one book released so far, but I'm loving the Shades series by Maureen Johnson. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I love HP as well. Luna was my favorite character. She was just so quirky.

  18. Woot! I love finding other people besides me who loved Order of the Phoenix! That's your favorite even though, er...even though it's not a great book for Sirius? It's not my favorite but it's up there with three and six.

  19. Same as you! Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. Even though there's only been two books, I pick Across the Universe too.

  21. Have series always saturated the YA market? I spent a lot of time reading between the ages of 13 and 16, and the only series that I discovered during that age group were the Georgia Nicolson (Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging) books and Katie Maxwell's Emily series. The rest were stand alone novels. I didn't do a whole lot of reading during college, but post graduation, I suddenly discovered there were series EVERYWHERE!

Series frustrate me. I almost never finish them. And most of the time, I think many series should have stopped after book one or two. But, this isn't supposed to be an anti-series comment, right?

My favorite series of all times is the Harry Potter series.
Favorite book: The Order of the Phoenix! Most HP fans I know like this book the least, partially because Harry suddenly becomes angsty and whiny. But, OotP introduced me to my favorite villain of all times. Even worse the Voldy. I'm talking about Umbridge of course! (Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite up until OotP. I've read it so many times the pages have separated from the binding, and they spill out over me when I read. I think I need a new book!)

Favorite character: Luna Lovegood or Neville Longbottom

Favorite scene: When Umbridge is carried off by the centaurs or when Molly kills Bellatrix! As Vernon Dursley would say smugly..."Justice!" ...Although, maybe he only said that in the movies. I can't quite recall.

Sometimes I feel like I'll never discover a series that will live up to it's awesomeness. I'm sure there are a few series that will come close. I've only ever read the first book in the Hunger Games, but if the next two books are as good as the first then The Hunger Games will probably fall second after Harry Potter.

Oh gosh! I totally didn't mean to write a novella!
