Waiting on Wednesday: The Body in the Woods

Wednesday, December 18, 2013

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spine, and specifically spotlights upcoming novels we can't wait to read. As always, there are some amazing upcoming books, but this week I'm particularly excited for…

Title: The Body in the Woods
Author: April Henry (Twitter)
Publisher: Henry Holt BYR
Publish Date: June 17, 2014
Genre: YA, Mystery
Pages: 272

Alexis, Nick, and Ruby have very different backgrounds: Alexis has spent her life covering for her mom’s mental illness, Nick’s bravado hides his fear of not being good enough, and Ruby just wants to pursue her eccentric interests in a world that doesn’t understand her. When the three teens join Portland County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, they are teamed up to search for a autistic man lost in the woods. What they find instead is a dead body. In a friendship that will be forged in danger, fear, and courage, the three team up to find the girl’s killer—before he can strike one of their own.

This first book in April Henry’s Point Last Seen YA mystery series is full of riveting suspense, putting readers in the middle of harrowing rescues and crime scene investigations.
You know what I think is lacking too often in the YA genre? Real mystery. We get a lot of mystery-light novels, but I don't think we get many stories that really grapple with fear, danger and suspense - the kind we can expect from, say, a Stephen King novel. April Henry is known for her killer stories though (pun intended), and they've never disappointment me. Plus, The Body in the Woods, sounds like it might just be the perfect setup to change all that. Perhaps, just perhaps, we might just get a novel that's truly worth of the title of mystery. Also, I'm totally loving the verdant cover. Just saying. What do you think, and what are you waiting on this week?

  1. I agree, as a mystery lover I would love to see 'real' mystery in YA. April Henry is fave of mine. <3 This book sounds like it has potential, deg adding it to my tbr!

  2. I haven't heard of this book but I do like a good mystery, so I might give it a try when it comes out! Great pick.

  3. YES! I can't wait for this one either! I really enjoyed The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die, so I have high hopes for this one as well. Sometimes I just need a good mystery/thriller. I don't read them all too often, so I always get excited when I find one I want:)

  4. I've never read anything by Henry, but I have heard nothing but awesome things. I rarely read mystery, but it's mostly because I can't find anything - and this sounds epic. Great pick, Melissa!

  5. Freaky, though not much of a mystery fan

  6. I haven't heard of this one, but I adore this genre and the cover is gorgeous. Onto my TBR it goes!

  7. I agree about the lack of true mysteries in YA -- but this one sounds like it might nail it!

  8. This is new-to-me and sounds awesome. You are so right that there aren't many YA mystery novels…hopefully this one won't disappoint. Great pick!

  9. Oh my gosh I love how by looking at the cover, you never really get a real inkling about what the story could be about, but by reading the blurb, you're hit with so much awesomeness. I agree that this book sounds fabulous Melissa, here's hoping that it will provide a decent mystery read! Lovely pick!

  10. I agree. There's not a lot of true mysteries left in YA, in fact, there's almost too much exposition. One series I think is the exception are The Raven Cycle books - they keep up the intrigue throughout and are so detailed!

  11. My sister loves mystery, and has been trying to get me into them too. This sounds like a great read, and I really love the cover.

Great post! I hope you can stop by my WoW post.
