Top Ten Tuesday: Books I'd Give First-Time Readers of Science Fiction

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

It's no secret that science fiction has long been a favorite genre of mine. There's something about these highly implausible, but eerily formidable worlds of technology, that make my heart skip a beat. I've long speculated that science fiction is the type of genre that's incredibly difficult to write, not always the easiest to read, but when done well, it's some of the best stuff out there. So, without further ado, here are the top ten books I'd recommend to someone who's never read a science fiction novel before.

Imposter by Susanne Winnacker. One by Leigh Ann Kopans. What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang.

Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris. The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson. Fair Coin by E.C. Myers.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Many Waters by Madeleine L'Engle. Minder by Kate Kaynak.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature from The Broke and the Bookish.

  1. I actually haven't read any of these except The Host, but then again, I tend to gravitate more towards space opera than direct science-fiction. I'll definitely have to look into these, though--particularly Many Waters. I adored A Wrinkle in Time but somehow never got around to picking up any sequels.

  3. I've only read What's Left of Me, Unraveling and The Host on your list, but they are all I thoroughly enjoyed. I need to read Impostor because I already have it.
I adored Leigh Ann Kopans YA contemporary book, so I think I would really like her sci-fi series too. Thanks for sharing, Melissa!

  4. The Host! So good. I don't think too fondly on the author's other works, but that book is fantastic.

Ender's Game! That one is such a classic.

    Love your choices! :)

  5. Great picks! I love sci-fi - my two faves from the ones you pick are Unraveling and The Host. I sobbing by the time I finished Unbreakable, it just made me feel ALL the feels. <3 I was surprise by how much I like The Host. The move adaptation was pretty awesome too, I really liked the casting.

  6. I have trouble getting into science fiction books, but I really should make more of an effort to read more of this genre. I've only read The Host out of all of the books in your list. I'll have to remedy this soon! Great picks :D

  7. I definitely don't read enough science fiction. I don't have any problems reading it but I just don't pick up the books enough. I'm going to have to check out Impostor, One, and What's Left of Me since those sounds like ones I'd really like.

    Great list!

  10. I adored Unraveling and The Host, so have always been on the lookout for something similar, which I would likely enjoy, so thank you for these brilliant recommendations Melissa, I look forward to giving some of these ago, especially The Adoration of Jenna Fox!

  11. Yay for scifi! I definitely agree that when done well, it's very impressive and enjoyable. Though I must admit I don't make the biggest effort to read scifi - hopefully some of your recs can fix that! I've been meaning to read What's Left of Me for a while now, and I need to finish L'Engle's Time quartet at some point.
Thanks for the recs! I'll have to look into them.
