Let's Talk: Favourite Book Quotes

Friday, October 11, 2013

Let's Talk is a weekly feature here at i swim for oceans. I think it's important that we all have our say, and there's something to be said for raising our voices. Simply put, here on the little old blog, I like to host some of my very own discussion posts because, well, I like to converse with you all.

And so, Let's Talk will feature questions or prompts, which I will answer, too. Love it or hate it, weigh in or don't, it's my hope that Let's Talk will at least get you thinking...and maybe even get you discussing with the rest of us!
What are some of your all-time favourite book quotes, and why do they remain your favourite to this day?

This prompt is actually one that's pretty near and dear to my heart. For the past five years or so, I've kept a little journal of all my favourite quotes. Whether they be from friends, poetry or novels, every quote in that journal speaks to me on some deeper level. These quotes range from funny, to sweet, to evocative and descriptive...not all of them might seem straightforward, but they all have their reasons and their place in my heart.

"Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light."
- Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter

"We've all got both light and dark inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are."
- Sirius Black, Harry Potter

"Roses. Wolf mutts. Tributes. Frosted Dolphins. Friends. Mockingjays. Stylists. Me. Everything screams in my dreams tonight."
- Mockingjay

"You will find joy, frustration and sorrow in your quest. Never forget that friendship and loyalty are more precious than riches...Happiness can be brief, but it knows no time in the land of dreams."
- Pearls of Lutra

"My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations."
- The Fault in Our Stars

"Just like there's always time for pain, there's always time for healing."
- Hate List

Obviously these are just a small few of the quotes that mean so much to me, but they speak to me on so many different levels. They're about feeling, passion, pain, growth and learning to live life fully. What quotes are on your list of all-time favourites, and why are they favourites of yours?

  1. I love the theme for this week: quotes. Book quotes. I love the feeling when I read a book and there's this certain line that somehow tugs me emotionally. I also have this journal full of quotes too :D And it's still alive until now^^ Love your favorite quotes by the way :')

  2. These are such nice quotes Melissa, I especially adore the ones from Harry Potter! I like your idea, of keeping all your quotes written in one book, I usually just highlight everything in my Kindle or write page numbers down somewhere and end up confused when I find them later! Thanks for sharing another great post with us! :)

  4. LOVE IT! I'm terrible about bookmarking the quotes that jump out to me but I do love when others highlight such beautiful and diverse quotes. That Albus Dumbledore one is my favorite, I think.

  5. I would love to have a look at your quote journal! I wish I kept track of my favorite quotes a little better. While all of these quotes are perfect, I love Mockingjay's the best.

  8. Smart idea to keep a journal with fave quotes. One I adore is Mal's romantic speech to Alina in Shadow and Bone-I have it bookmarked in my copy.

  9. I am a big fan of quotes, but most of my favourites are more, uh, favourite paragraphs than they are quotes! I've started a monthly feature on my blog where I am showcasing some of my favourites. Harry Potter is so full of great quotes!

  10. I adore quotes! They're little things that say so much, and the ones you said are definitely some of my favourites! I actually started a meme called Saturday Sayings just so I could talk about quotes I love!

  11. Oh man, I LOVE book quotes. That's why I do my Sunday quotations and why I found an awesome plug in that lets me rotate quotes right on my blog. One of my favorite things is when I'm reading a book and something sticks out enough that I want to underline it and share it later.
