Let's Talk: Favourite Spooky & Creepy Books

Friday, October 25, 2013

Let's Talk is a weekly feature here at i swim for oceans. I think it's important that we all have our say, and there's something to be said for raising our voices. Simply put, here on the little old blog, I like to host some of my very own discussion posts because, well, I like to converse with you all.

And so, Let's Talk will feature questions or prompts, which I will answer, too. Love it or hate it, weigh in or don't, it's my hope that Let's Talk will at least get you thinking...and maybe even get you discussing with the rest of us!
With Halloween Being Next Week, What are Your Favourite Spooky/Creepy Reads?

It's no secret on this blog that this miss loves her horror books. Let's be honest, I can't sit through a horror movie without plugging my ears and covering my eyes (plus having nightmares for weeks), but I'm addicted. I just can't help it. The same goes for books, really. The creepier the better, for me, and if a book is classed as horror or scary - it had better live up, or I'll be personally offended! There are a few books that have really stood out in this category for me though, and I they're my go-to books when readers ask for recommendations.

The thing is, each of these books has something else going for it. 172 Hours on the Moon is dark, eerie and contemplative. There's a danger - faceless and daunting - that consistently lurks in the background and creeps you out with every page. Anna Dressed in Blood, while more contemporary, embraces the vivid gore of true horror and manages to make a fascinating character out of a psychotic ghost.

Harbinger is a lurking mystery. While not always outwardly terrifying, there's a danger in every word, every page and every turn. It's a high-stakes book. Lockdown is horror in it's most straightforward form. There's a vivid grunge feel to it that makes you feel as though you're trapped with the character - not a good place to be.

  1. My co-blogger Blythe reviewed 172 Hours On The Moon just recently and I got really intrigued by the idea of it. Def. adding it to the TBR pile! Oh and Anna, love that series :)

    Great post, Melissa! <33

  2. I'm not usually one to read creepy books, or watch scary films either, but around this time I always like to step out of my comfort zone. As usual I haven't read a single one of your recommendations, but will definitely try to get around to reading at least one of them. Thanks for another lovely post Melissa! :)

  3. I recently read Another Little Piece which is definitely one of my favorite "creepy" books now since it gave me the chills, as did The Diviners. I still have to read Anna Dressed in Blood, but I'm glad to see you enjoyed that one, Melissa. Great post!

  4. I'm a big, fat chicken when it comes to scary books. I've read most of Stephen King's books but...it takes a lot for me to pick up a truly scary one. Anna DIB was one of my most recent reads and I did enjoy that one, though!

  6. Loved Anna Dressed in Blood so much Melissa! I actually surprised myself with that one because we both know I'm a giant wimp and can't deal with gore, but despite how gory it was I just couldn't get enough of it. I was just fascinated by Anna:)

  7. I love horror movies and scary stories - although like you, I get scared too! ha! I'm currently reading In the Shadow of Blackbirds which is a pretty spooky, atmospheric read. I need to read Anna Dressed in Blood - I've heard so many good things about that one! Tighter by Adele Griffin is one of my favourite 'sends-shivers-down-my-spine-wtf-did-that-just-happen?!!' reads! :)

  8. I'm ashamed that the only book I've read on your list is Anna Dressed in Blood. I personally didn't enjoy Anna as much as everyone did, but it was well-written.
I've had my eyes on Harbinger for a while now it looks great.
    Thanks for sharing, Melissa!
