Top Ten Tuesday: Covers I Wish I Could Redesign

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. The feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists over at The Broke and the Bookish.

Each week they will post a new top ten list that one of our bloggers at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All they ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It's a great way to get to know your fellow bloggers.

The Top Ten Covers I Wish I Could Redesign

For the record, I'm not a designer. I try my hand at it occasionally, but let's be honest. I'm never going to be a designer, and any sad attempts I did feign would probably fall remarkably short. All that aside, however, there are some covers that just don't work for me - whether aesthetically, or simply in context of the novel. Others, well, they had amazing predecessors and then simply settled for ordinary (cough…Return to Paradise and Fathomless). And, for the record, I've always thought the girl on the first Vampire Academy book was Angelina Jolie. I'm jussayin'.

Circle of Silence by Carol M. Tanzman. Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr. Many Waters by Madeleine L'Engle. Return to Paradise by Simone Elkeles. Fathomless by Jackson Pearce. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. Sean Griswold's Head by Lindsey Leavitt. Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson. Need by Carrie Jones. Dark Song by Gail Giles.

  1. I actually think the Angelina Jolie thing was what they were going for on the VA cover. But ew that cover to Return for Paradise is shouting for a redesign, it's uncomfortable looking at it. Great post Mel!

    1. Haha I think that she just looks too old to be Rose, you know? Blergh.

  2. OMG- yes! The Vampire Academy covers are horrible. I really, really am not a fan and I LOVE the series. I feel like the covers just do not work. I also can't stand the cover of Need either...definitely needs a redesign!

  3. The Vampire Diaries seems to be on everyone's list today. It could really do with a little cover TLC. I put Need on my list as well because..I mean.. um why is she just a mouth? Great list!

  4. Vampire Academy seems to be popular this week. It is a pretty awful cover!

    1. I just feel like they're not in the same realm of awesomeness as the books...which is super unfortunate!

  5. Great list. I hate the new Jackson Pearce covers a bit because the first set we're so creative. Great list!

    1. I agree :/ I find a lot of the newly redesigned covers to just be so ordinary.

  6. Rose is very Angelina Jolie-ish on that cover isn't she? I never really noticed before but you're absolutely right. I never quite cared for that cover either, though I'm typically not a fan of close-up face covers anyway because they don't really have anything to do with the book. And sometimes the model looks nothing like the character which is always frustrating (even though I get it from a practicality standpoint). I don't like the Simone Elkeles one either simply because they're so obviously photoshopped over the lake background and the lighting on their faces doesn't seem match the fact that it's night in the background. That's super nitpicky, but I can't help it:)

    1. But I totally agree! Leaving Paradise was simple and stark contrasts. Return to Paradise is just....mehhhh

  7. My heart was broken when they changed the style of the Sisters Red covers. Oh, I loved those so much---now they just looks so ordinary.

  8. I'm glad you have Sean Griswold's Head on your list, too. I felt like everyone who was commenting on my post was saying how they loved that cover and I felt like I was the only one!

  9. HAHA I am sooooo glad I am not the only person who originally thought it was Angelina Jolie! She looks just like her, with the weird crazy smile and big lips. I can't argue with any of your choices, they are all really bad! My TTT.

  10. I'm so ambivalent toward the VA and Bloodlines covers. I think that they need to be redesigned ASAP. Thanks for stopping by.

  11. That's what I always think about the Vampire Academy cover! I don't like the covers from the Need series. I do like Fathomless, although I prefer the older designs from Sister Red & Sweetly.

  12. I've always thought the girl on VA looked like Angelina Jolie too - it's uncanny!

    Great top ten!!
