Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. The feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists over at The Broke and the Bookish. They'd love to share their lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

Each week they will post a new top ten list that one of our bloggers at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All they ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post AND add your name to the Linky widget so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don't have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It's a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers.
Top Ten Books I Feel As Though Everyone Has Read But Me:

1. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins - Well, you know me and contemps. It's hit or miss, and I'm too scared this will be a miss. Now I'm thinking I might be missing out though, eh?

2. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead - I was late to Vampire Academy, and I'm one of those people that fears a crossover series won't live up. Yikes. I'm sensing a theme.

3. The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson - Well, I tried to read it, but I got stuck on page two, and I put it down and picked up something else. I've seen incredible reviews though, so I'm sure it was a case of the wrong time for a great book.

4. Shut Out by Kody Keplinger - Again with the trend in contemps, I know. Honestly, I struggled with her other book - not because of the writing but because the material just wasn't for me. Colour me nuts. I dunno...maybe I'll come back to this one...

5. Forbidden by Tabitha Suzman - I'm actually DYING to start this one, and I have it on my TBR, but there are so many books I have to review first. I can't wait to start this one though - it's all the right kinds of twisty!

6. Torment by Lauren Kate - I'm sure this series is loved and fawned over by plenty, but I couldn't get past book one. It felt too familiar to me. I doubt I'll be able to continue the series.

7. The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen - Well, I love some of her other titles, but I've never managed to get around to this one...I take it I should though?

8. A Need So Beautiful by Suzanne Young - Love the cover, I really do, but the premise never really hooked me, unfortunately. Maybe one day it will captivate me. Until then, I'll just enjoy the reviews.

9. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens - So, sue me. This one is one of those that I was ordered to read for middle school and couldn't finish it. I know, I know. I'm horrible. This taste of the classics was too sour for me.

10. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien - Again, sue me. Aragorn is so much better onscreen as Viggo Mortenson...Oh, wait. Did I just say that out loud? Man candy + epic battles + great visuals = movie > book (for me.)

  1. 'The Truth About Forever' is my favourite Dessen book, so I have to say: YES, you must read it!!!!

'The Sky is Everywhere' is one of my favourite all-time books, so ditto for that one, and same with 'Anna'... utterly epic.

I couldn't get through the LOTR books. 'The Hobbit' I adore, but the trilogy? Not so much.

  2. The Sky is Everywhere is so wonderful! As is Anna.
I couldn't get past the first Lauren Kate book either.

  3. The Sky Is Everywhere and Anna and The French Kiss is amazing. You definitely need to give them a try :)

  4. LOL--the only one I've read off your list is ANNA, which I adored. The rest of those...meh. Probably never get around to reading them, sadly.

  5. I was suppose to read Tale of Two Cities for a high school English class over 50 years ago and I have still not read it. In fact I have only read one book by Dickens, A Christmas Carol and will never read anything else by him as I find his writing tedious and verbose. That being said, I hope you will try Anna and the French Kiss, I held out a lone time but love Perkins writing and am glad I finally read it and have just finished The Boy Next Door and loved it too.

  6. TOTALLY agree with you about The Lord of the Rings! I've been stalled in the middle of the second book for months (those trees are even more boring in the book). Thank goodness for the visuals and character depth the movies provided or I wouldn't have even made it this far.

  7. I love you, Melissa, but I will fight you for Viggo. To the death! Bahaha. Anyway, don't let fear keepyou from reading! I was really worried about Bloodlines but it ended up rocking. And Anna and the French Kiss was amazing!

  8. Hi Melissa!

  9. I strongly encourage you to read The Sky is Everywhere very soon Melissa. I know you like contemps that dig deep, and this one definitely does! It's one of my fave contemps I've read this year & you know I've read A LOT of contemps! lol

  11. I feel sad right now. Why Nina? Well, I haven't read any of those books either. :)

  12. Anna and the French Kiss is a super cute book... and I haven't read the Lord of the Rings series either, but I'll watch the movies with you anytime.

  15. You should definitely give Anna & The French Kiss a try! Same with The Truth About Forever :)

Lol, the Lord of the Rings movies are definitely more engaging (and filled with eye candy) than the books are. I only made it through the first book before deciding that I'd just watch the movies instead ;)

  16. You are not alone. I haven't read Anna & the French Kiss either.

  17. I haven't read any of the titles on your list either! But I do have Anna and the French Kiss and The Sky is Everyone on my to be read list.

  18. Aw, man, A Tale of Two Cities was one of my fave reads freshman year of high school! Haha. Other than A Need So Beautiful, Anna, Shut Out, and LoTR, I haven't read the books you listed. Great picks, Melissa!

  19. Oh, I strongly recommend LOTR! Forbidden is on my list too.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lol, i read the Lotr books a week before seeing the first movie ;)

  21. Anna is one of my fave books, but I'm a contemp fan! And I think watching The Lord of the Rings movies is a perfectly valid substitute for reading the books. :)

  22. I want to read Forbidden too. I don't feel like everyone else has read it but me, but it's still good to know that I'm not alone. :)

  23. I just finished Anna and the French Kiss and loved it! Contemporaries aren't my thing and romances aren't my thing, and contemporary romances most definitely aren't my thing but Anna worked for some reason.

  24. I have read and loved most everything on your list, but I have never touched Tolkien. Or a Tale of Two Cities.

Anna and the French Kiss is a cute read and really worth it. Forbidden is not about incest. Not an issue book at all. Just a gut wrenching story.

Loved Torment, but I'm a Lauren Kate fan. Have, but haven't read the other books. Just waiting for the pile to go down!

  25. To be fair, I had the same fear with Anna. I couldn't get past the cover (and the title) which seemed almost cheesy, but the book really was quite good and is definitely a feel-good read.

I'm having the same issue with the Fallen books, though. I have some of them, but haven't read them yet as they seem interesting but I'm afraid it's not all going to work together the way I'd like.

A Need So Beautiful was nice, but I had a real difficult time getting past the idea that someone had to give up their existence. I didn't find that romantic at all. Was it just me?

I don't want to take over, but I'm agreeing with you for the most part!

  26. Melissa, I love the VA series, and I just finished Bloodlines...i liked, but I didn't love it like I did VA. I think the series will get better, but Sydney is harder to relate to as a character. Rose dominates a room, a book, a series. Sydney isn't the same. I think the next book will be better though. I don't know if I'll ever read Torment, either. Fallen just didn't inspire me to do so. However, I HIGHLY recommend Anna and the French Kiss. But, it's more a fun exciting contemp with moments of amazing rather than something super deep and life changing. It will definitely make you smile.

  27. Don't feel bad. I've only read a torment. Didn't like it as much as Fallen.

  28. I've only read 2 of these books. I think it's safe to say that you're not alone.

  29. Recently I read Hot Skull, which I found on Amazon and it was an eye opener. I found it riveting and real. A good read.
