Waiting on Wednesday: Fathomless

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill from Breaking the Spine, and specifically spotlights upcoming novels we can't wait to read. As always, there are some amazing upcoming books, but this week I'm particularly excited for...

Title: Fathomless
Author: Jackson Pearce
Publisher: Little, Brown BYR
Publish Date: September 4, 2012
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Pages: 304
Celia Reynolds is the youngest in a set of triplets and the one with the least valuable power. Anne can see the future, and Jane can see the present, but all Celia can see is the past. And the past seems so insignificant -- until Celia meets Lo.

Lo doesn't know who she is. Or who she was. Once a human, she is now almost entirely a creature of the sea -- a nymph, an ocean girl, a mermaid -- all terms too pretty for the soulless monster she knows she's becoming. Lo clings to shreds of her former self, fighting to remember her past, even as she's tempted to embrace her dark immortality.

When a handsome boy named Jude falls off a pier and into the ocean, Celia and Lo work together to rescue him from the waves. The two form a friendship, but soon they find themselves competing for Jude's affection. Lo wants more than that, though. According to the ocean girls, there's only one way for Lo to earn back her humanity. She must persuade a mortal to love her . . . and steal his soul.
I have always been a sucker for fairy tales. Always. Especially because they usually have a darker, more sinister underbelly if you read between the lines. Fathomless is the latest in this fantastic series of awesome fairy tale retellings, and let me tell you...mermaids?! Sold. The characters sound fantastic, and I love the fact that there is a deeper hidden meaning within that synopsis, and I can't wait to uncover the secret parts of the classic story of The Little Mermaid. What do you think, and what are you waiting on this week?

  1. What is about the water and mysteries that always sucks me in? :)

  2. This sounds like a love triangle!! Don't really go for those but other than that is sounds wonderful. Great pick Melissa. :)

  3. YES YES YES! :) I'm super excited for this one too - it sounds pretty fun and I love the whole underwater aspect!

  4. I have this on my shelf from BEA - and I'm starting it soon! I love it when authors incorporate fairytales into a story.

  5. I'll totally add this to my list. I'm collecting mermaid books and I don't have this one. Thanks a ton for recommending it! I'll look forward to it's release! :D

  6. Great pick! This one sounds really good. I've had Sister's Red on my shelf for the longest time and I still need to read it!

  8. Sounds a like it could be a love triangle, but I love books based of fairy tales so I'm still excited :)
