Celia Reynolds is the youngest in a set of triplets and the one with the least valuable power. Anne can see the future, and Jane can see the present, but all Celia can see is the past. And the past seems so insignificant -- until Celia meets Lo.

Lo doesn't know who she is. Or who she was. Once a human, she is now almost entirely a creature of the sea -- a nymph, an ocean girl, a mermaid -- all terms too pretty for the soulless monster she knows she's becoming. Lo clings to shreds of her former self, fighting to remember her past, even as she's tempted to embrace her dark immortality.
Celia, Jane and Anne are of the sea. Each sister is armed with their own distinctive power. Celia sees your past, Jane understands your present and Anne can see your future. Celia has always been the least powerful and important of the three, or so she thought. When Lo appears with no recollection of who she once was, Celia can connect her past to her present and might just be able to give Lo the greatest gift of all - one that she might just need. But all gifts and powers come at a price, and Lo's price...is high.

Fathomless is the latest installment in a promising series of fairy tale retellings. This time, readers are treated to an imaginative underwater world filled with mermaids, sea creatures and a dark retelling of the children's classic, The Little Mermaid. Interestingly enough, author Jackson Pearce has given us another novel that is a companion the Sisters Red and Sweetly, giving us little hints as to how these stories are minutely enmeshed with one another. With a cold, swirling underwater world as a backdrop and characters that keep you guessing for days, Fathomless moves swimmingly (pun intended).

I have to admit, guys, that I'm a little bit torn on this installment in the series retellings. I wanted really, really badly to love Fathomless, and while there are elements that I thought were done exceptionally well, there were a lot of things about the book that left me wanting more. The book is told in alternating viewpoints from Lo and Celia, which I thought was done quite well. It can be difficult to keep the pace of a book moving if you don't feel a connection with their voices, or if they're not distinct enough. Fathomless did well in terms of distinguishing between both their voices and, therefore, really allowed me to see deeper into their characters, which was a highlight for me. However, I felt that their attraction to the human boy, Jude was a bit cloying and while, yes, it is that way in the classic tale, let's be honest...don't we all want a real reason? There was also a bit of information overload with Fathomless. We're given a great setup, awesome characters and a winning synopsis, but establishing the connections between the companion novels felt a bit too convenient and too forced at times. It also threw the pacing for a bit and drew me out of the world beneath the waves into a mess of confusion, which kind of pulled me away from my love of the story. Thankfully, a winning element, yet again, is the author's ability to create a rich world with vivid words and fantastic prose throughout.

I'm by no means saying that this is a bad book because it's not, and the author's writing style really does shine, as always. I give Fathomless a 3 out of 5, and I'm sure it will work better for other readers than it did for me. I recommend it to fans of YA, especially those who enjoy fantasy and fairy tale retellings.

I received this book free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This, in no way, affected my opinion or review of this book.

Top Ten Books On my 2012 Fall TBR List:

1. Crewel by Gennifer Albin - This one not only has a fantastic cover, but I love the uniqueness of the plot. A girl who really doesn't want to become a Spinster? A Spinster that's more than its name implies? Sign me up.

2. The Waiting Sky by Lara Zielin - This has been on my TBR since this summer, and I just keep pushing it off because I'm afraid it would live up to my hopes. It sounds beautiful and a bit dark...the perfect combo!

3. Eve & Adam by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant - There has been SO much hype surrounding this one. If it sucks, I'm going to be absolutely devastated. I think the spin the Biblical, plus the sci-fi twist could very well be amazing.

4. Fathomless by Jackson Pearce - I've yet to read a bad retelling from Ms. Pearce. Seriously, and this one is a twist on The Little Mermaid! I think that it could very well be my favourite yet!

5. Such a Rush by Jennifer Echols - I received this one a while back, but my review queue made it impossible for me to actually pick it up. I have heard the most amazing things about it though, so I can't wait to give it a go!

6. Stealing Parker by Miranda Kenneally - I was late to the game with Catching Jordan. Like really late to the game...but I loved it. I heard this one doesn't disappoint either, so I'm hoping for another contemporary treat.

7. The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - Confession. I've read it. Second confession...it's mind-blowingly awesome. Last confession? I need to read it again before I review it, but holy hell. Epic.

8. The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling - Ok, this one's a bit off the beaten path for me because I don't review adult books, but guys...it's J.K. freaking Rowling! I'm a bit scared and a bit excited to see what her first adult fiction is like.

9. Live Through This by Mindi Scott - This author has a take on contemporary that makes me actually kind of like it! It's issue-based, but not too much so...romantic, but never cloying. It's like the best of all worlds.

10. Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor - Guys, I loved Daughter of Smoke & Bone. Like LOVED it. Needless to say, I need to love the sequel, like yesterday. I can't wait to see what happens next.

When a handsome boy named Jude falls off a pier and into the ocean, Celia and Lo work together to rescue him from the waves. The two form a friendship, but soon they find themselves competing for Jude's affection. Lo wants more than that, though. According to the ocean girls, there's only one way for Lo to earn back her humanity. She must persuade a mortal to love her . . . and steal his soul.
I have always been a sucker for fairy tales. Always. Especially because they usually have a darker, more sinister underbelly if you read between the lines. Fathomless is the latest in this fantastic series of awesome fairy tale retellings, and let me tell you...mermaids?! Sold. The characters sound fantastic, and I love the fact that there is a deeper hidden meaning within that synopsis, and I can't wait to uncover the secret parts of the classic story of The Little Mermaid. What do you think, and what are you waiting on this week?

Top Ten Books on My Summer TBR Pile:

1. Love and Other Perishable Items by Laura Buzo – I featured this on my WoW the other day, and was so excited to snag a copy on Netgalley. Seriously, there’s something about Aussie authors and books that just blow my mind in the realm of contemporary. If this isn’t the perfect read on my TBR, I don’t know what is.

2. Fathomless by Jackson Pearce – This author never fails to succeed in her writing. Despite the fact that I’m not absolutely in love with the cover (so sue me), I really can’t wait to start reading this book this summer!

3. Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian – Contemporary fiction isn’t always a hit for me. This is no secret. However, there’s something so dark and nasty about the girls in this story that makes me want to read it oh-so-badly! I think it might be like watching a trainwreck. You just. Can’t. Stop.

4. Embers & Echoes by Karsten Knight – I know that some people were divided in their opinions of the first installment of this series but, hey, I loved it. I can’t wait to read book two, and you better believe this bad boy is on my summer TBR list!

5. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green – I don’t know why I’ve put off reading this book because I definitely have a copy of it. I think I’m always afraid to be done with his books…it’s like a little piece of my heart dying. So, naturally, I’m going to have to buckle down and really fall in love with another of his books. For shame.

6. Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty – Ok, I know that Bumped didn’t work for me, but this author has a legion of fans behind her, and I love her writing style. I’ve heard endlessly good things about this series, so I’m finally going to start it…this summer. Heck yes.

7. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta – So many people have said they love this book. I’ve had it on my shelf forever, and I keep putting it off, but I think it’s time to finally buckle down and read it. I have this epic fear of being disappointed by great books…that’s my greatest fear!

8. Flock by Wendy Delsol – I swear this is one of the most underrated series ever. Not only is the author absofreakinlutely fantastic, but this series is so original and entertaining. I highly recommend it to everyone, and I’m excited to read this final installment.

9. Throne of Glass by Sarah Maas – Ummmm it has swords. And boys. And fighting. And love. Does it get much better than that?! Seriously, I’ve been waiting for this one for FAR too long. I cannot freaking wait to finally read it! Oh, and I have a couple copies to give away…jussayin’.

10. Beta by Rachel Cohn – Guys, I love me some dystopian. There’s something about broken down worlds that makes me appreciate ours so much more. I mean, that’s partially the point, right? Seriously though, this story looks epic…with just a twist of sci-fi. What could be better?!
