Author: M. Anjelais

The closest he will ever come to happiness is when he's hurting her. Will she let him? A beautiful and twisted story of first love and innocence lost--written when the author was just eighteen.

Sphinxie and Cadence. Promised to each other in childhood. Drawn together again as teens. Sphinxie is sweet, compassionate, and plain. Cadence is brilliant, charismatic. Damaged. And diseased. When they were kids, he scarred her with a knife. Now, as his illness progresses, he becomes increasingly demanding. She wants to be loyal--but fears for her life. Only the ultimate sacrifice will give this love an ending.
There is something wrong with me. I have an addiction to the hard-hitting, powerful and often gruesome stories within the bounds of contemporary fiction because they are often the most intense and thought-provoking stories. Breaking Butterflies sounds like an emotional rollercoaster of feels, plus the psychological aspect of it is dangerously alluring. This could very well be one incredibly powerful novel...that I absolutely must read. What do you think, and what are you waiting on this week?

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature from Jill at Breaking the Spine.

  1. I have to be honest. This book sounds a little messed up. But in a fascinating, I have to know what happens kind of way:) Why would her parents promise her to someone with clear issues like Cadence? Where are all the people ready to step in and help? WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS BOOK MELISSA?! I'm excited:)

  2. This sounds like it's either going to be a train wreck or something so freaking gutting. I'm intrigued by it, and I hope that it lives up to the summary because oh boy.

  3. I just went to the Chicken House website and read the first chapter. I won't spoil anything but there is a logical explanation to your question Jenny. What I am afraid of is that this is one more book that will show mental illness in it's extremes and perpetuate the stigma that we are all crazy/dangerous/should be locked away. I'm looking for a book that encourages YA readers to seek help for their mental illness or their symptoms or what they might think is a mental illness. I'm afraid this one might just further damage the image of mental illness in YA with what seems to be it's sensationalism. Forgive me for not reserving judgment. I've been disappointed way too many times.

    1. Oh, that's a shame to hear, Heather. I'm always interested in exploring the deeper, more powerful issues of mental illness, but I don't want to read sensationalism. This is the type of book, however, that makes me want to actually talk to the author.

  4. Ooh, this one sounds intense (love the cover - so interesting to look at)! Although the "written when the author was just eighteen" aspect makes me a bit wary. I have yet to read a book by a very young author that WOW'd me.

    Still, nice find!
