The last person Zac expects in the room next door is a girl like Mia, angry and feisty with questionable taste in music. In the real world, he wouldn’t—couldn’t—be friends with her. In hospital different rules apply, and what begins as a knock on the wall leads to a note—then a friendship neither of them sees coming. You need courage to be in hospital; different courage to be back in the real world. In one of these worlds Zac needs Mia. And in the other Mia needs Zac. Or maybe they both need each other, always
I've been looking for the next great contemporary novel, after a series of significant lulls, and I have to say that Zac & Mia sounds like a real gem. This book was originally published in Australia, has won numerous prizes and sounds like it could be the type of story that takes my breath away. There's nothing wrong with a little angst if it's backed up by real emotion...right?! What do you think, and what are you waiting on this week?
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature from Jill at Breaking the Spine.
Aussie novels are always incredibly unique and wind up being such gems, so I have a feeling this is going to be a good one. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Melissa!(:
ReplyDeleteIt happens in a hospital? That doesn't bode well for me. I like angsty books but if there are characters dying then I can't deal with that. I'll wait to see what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteOooo this does sound good Melissa! You always find the best WoWs! I'm going to need you to read this one first though, because the mention of a hospital has me thinking maybe one of them won't be alive and well at the end as I want them to be. And you know how well I deal with character deaths!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. Another Australian book that I must add to my tbr. I have found some really amazing Australian books before. This sounds like it could be sad because it's set in a hospital. I hope you enjoy reading it.

I have to agree, I haven't had a lot of luck with the contemps lately. This sounds good though. Great pick.

Oh, I can't take another TFIOS. I just don't think my heart can hold onto all of that. You read it first, then I'll decide. I'm with Jenny! I said I wasn't going to shy away from books that made me uncomfortable this year, but...I'm just going to wait for your review!!
ReplyDeleteI usually don't read a lot of contemporary books, but this one looks interesting. One I'd make an exception for. Thank you for sharing :)

This seems like it's one of those big tear breaker (nothing against it though). I think I need to add this to my TBR list! :)
ReplyDeleteThis does sound good. I will add it to my list!
ReplyDeleteCute cover but I'll bet the inside tears the reader to shreds!! Two kids in a hospital? How could it now?
ReplyDeleteBeen hearing some buzz over this one lately! Hope you end up loving it too!

This sounds soo good! My dad has spent MONTHS at a time in the hospital so naturally me and my mom move in. I love these kind of stories even though they make you cry like a big fat baby. Thanks for sharing!

I agree, there's nothing wrong with angst if it's backed by real emotions instead of put in as a plot device. This does sound good, Melissa. Great choice! :)
