I swear that series are both the biggest blessing and the biggest curse for book bloggers...or, at least for me. I'm the type of person that absolutely loves to follow along a real adventure for many books and, sometimes, many years (ie: Harry Potter). These days, however, I simply lack the patience when it comes to finishing series. I start them, and I want to be able to read right through. Often times, this is because I want to read everything right away. Other times, it's just because I can't stand the wait, and with a lot of books to review, they simply get left behind along the way. And then there's always the case of the series for which I'm excited, but the first book just doesn't entice me enough to continue.
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Need by Carrie Jones
Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare
Fallen by Lauren Kate
The Selection by Kiera Cass
Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr
Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins
Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
The Iron King by Julie Kagawa
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature from The Broke and the Bookish.
I was the same way with The Mortal Instruments series. I read the first one and really enjoyed it, tried the second book, City of Ashes, but could not get into it.

Yeah, it started off great for me, but I felt it because a bit too formulaic after book two. I figured there are a million other books for me to read, so I should spend my time on something else anyway :)
DeleteI've been trying to finish the Wicked Lovely series, but for some reason I haven't gotten past the second book.
ReplyDeleteI think I started Ink Exchange, and I just got too bored to continue on. I loved Wicked Lovely though!
DeleteGreat topic! It's funny, you've listed some of my favorite series. I love the Hex Hall series, The Iron King series and the Shiver trilogy. Lol! I'm kind of obsessive about finishing a series once I start, unless I absolutely hate it of course. Thanks for stopping by Reading on the Farm, new follower on Bloglovin!
ReplyDeleteI've loved some of these books, too, but some just didn't catch me enough to continue! And, unfortunately, I'm one of the lone few bloggers that just didn't like the Shiver series ;)
DeleteI'd totally recommend you give a chance to The Infernal Devices and The Iron King series, those are two that I highly enjoyed, even if the beginning of Clockwork Angel was a bit eeeek for me, I continued and loved the series!
ReplyDeleteI think my only real issue with Clockwork Angel is that it felt like the exact same novel as City of Bones - just with different characters. One of these days though, I will! :)
DeleteI quit the Wicked Lovely series. I didn't like the direction it was headed but I asked around to find out everything that happened so I know how it all ended.

Some of those I never started and others I never finished either. :)
ReplyDeleteYes I got many of those ;)
ReplyDeleteI recently did a post about series and the fact I start so many and never finish them. In the last four years I have started 106 series and only completed 25 of them. I am really impatient and like to be able to read the series all the way through. I haven't completed any of these series either but do hope to get to The One quite soon.
ReplyDeleteI am the same way. I am behind with Mortal Instruments, Fallen, Iron King, and Shiver. Sadly, I may only finish Mortal Instruments. I finished the Clockwork Angel series and LOVED it, so you should definitely check that out. I feel the same way though…it's hard with review books and new books coming out…sometimes series with too many books get caught in the shuffle!
ReplyDeleteI'm becoming notorious for this since I simply can't remember enough and don't care anymore about series to finish them. I didn't finish Divergent, Blood Red Road, City of Bones, and wish I hadn't finished the Clockwork Angel trilogy. I did really enjoy the Shiver trilogy, but I read the books back-to-back without needing to wait. I didn't finish Hush, Hush either, or Unearthly for that matter. And those are the series I can think of off the top of my head. *sigh* They really are both the biggest curse and the biggest blessing to us bloggers, aren't they? Lovely post, Melissa -- I feel you!
ReplyDeleteI love reading series! You know...the cliffhangers, the anticipation, etc. At the same though it seems EVERYTHING is a series. Plus you have novellas that are becoming more popular, which adds even more to your growing list. Sometimes a standalone is great too. You read the book everything is wrapped up and your good to go lol.
ReplyDeleteI feel similarly about series, I just want to read them all at once, so sometimes it's nice to wait (if you can avoid spoilers) and read them when all the books have been released! And it seems like so many books get pushed into being a series when really there was no need or not enough of a story to flesh out 2 more books!

Ehh yeah, I feel like there are quite a few series these days that I start and decide not to finish because I wasn't wowed. I did very much enjoy The Infernal Devices series so I would still recommend finishing up that one if you ever find the time (and only if you enjoyed the first book). But yeah, I have also given up on a few of these series too.
ReplyDeleteI finished The Infernal Devices series but wish I didn't. So disappointing. I also finished Wicked Lovely and I can't say that I like how that turned out either. I finished the Shiver series and loved it. I only read books 1-3 of the Mortal Instruments and I think that's were I'll stop. It ended perfectly, IMO and I don't want any drama to ruin Jace and Clary for me. I also finished Hex Hall. There are so many other series that I've lost interest in, though that I haven't finished and I probably won't ever. Great list here, Melissa. :)
ReplyDeleteI've actually started City of Bones, Fallen and Hush Hush (which was terrible, let's be honest) and haven't finished or felt inclined to read them either. Seems like a common thing with some of these books!
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean! I just can't seem to finish half the series I start. I just don't have the patience. Or I don't like the first book. I started many of the series on your list, like Fallen, Shiver, Need and Hush, Hush, and I just did not like them. Oh well. You're going to have some books you don't like, I suppose. Great list! :D
ReplyDeleteI've started and read most of these series except the last book. I did finish The Infernal Devices and I absolutely loved it. It killed me, but I loved it. But you are not alone in not loving the Shiver series:)
ReplyDeleteMust finish Iron Fey series!!!! Favourite book is The Iron Queen! <3
ReplyDeleteFor Mortal Instruments and Clockwork Angels I read the first one, and they were good, but not good enough for me to hunt out the next books and read those, when there are so many new stories I haven't read! Blogging has definitely caused me to follow less series, because I want to read so many books, and I feel like I don't have time for series that I only kind of liked!
