Monday Movie Review #3 - When In Rome

This past weekend, I got to see When In Rome with a couple of friends of mine. We decided we needed a little pick-me-up emotionally, so we indulged...in this.



An ambitious young New Yorker, disillusioned with romance, takes a whirlwind trip to Rome where she defiantly plucks magic coins from a “foolish” fountain of love, inexplicably igniting the passion of an odd group of suitors: a sausage magnate, a street magician, an adoring painter and a self-admiring model. But when a charming reporter pursues her with equal zest, how will she know if his love is the real thing?

I'll be the first to admit, chick flicks are a dime a dozen, so it's rare when you find one that ups the ante, so to speak. While When In Rome doesn't really do that, it's still a fun movie, and hey, it features Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars, anyone?!?! I'm still bitter that show was canceled.) I digress. Back to the flick.

In a nutshell, this movie follows Beth as she journeys to Rome for her sister's wedding. Ever unlucky in love, Beth decides to be a rebel and steal coins from the Trevi fountain. Little does she know, there's a myth that if one steals coins from the fountain, whoever tossed them in will automatically fall in love with the person who plucked them out. Therein lies the problem - Beth might just have feelings for the young, hot reporter, Josh Duhamel, that's on her tail, but she's not sure if that's simply because she took his coins, or if he might just really love her.

This film is fun, cute, and sexy in a totally endearing way. You want to get to know the characters better, and it's funnier because if you know that Kristen Bell is actually dating Dax Shepard in real life, it makes the dynamic that much better. The actors are perfect for their roles, and it's a fun, brainless, cheddar cheese chick flick for everyone...just don't go in expecting a deep, meaningful piece.

Highlights Include: Josh Duhamel dancing, vase-breaking fail, Jon Heder's entire role, and much, much more. I give this movie a 4 out of 5. Below is the trailer, if you've yet to see it.
