Monday Movie Review #11 - The Last Song

Monday, April 5, 2010

I saw two movies this past week(end), so I figured I'd start with the first, The Last Song, which I saw on opening night.

Seventeen year old Veronica "Ronnie" Miller's life was turned upside-down when her parents divorced and her father moved from New York City to Wilmington, North Carolina. Three years later, she remains angry and alientated from her parents, especially her father...until her mother decides it would be in everyone's best interest if she spent the summer in Wilmington with him. Ronnie's father, a former concert pianist and teacher, is living a quiet life in the beach town, immersed in creating a work of art that will become the centerpiece of a local church. The tale that unfolds is an unforgettable story of love on many levels--first love, love between parents and children -- that demonstrates, as only a Nicholas Sparks novel can, the many ways that love can break our hearts...and heal them.
Taken from GoodReads.

For those of you who didn't know, The Last Song is based on the book by the same name, written by Nicholas sparks, who also happened to pen the screenplay for the one and only slutty Miley Cyrus. This story is one of love, family, heartbreak, rebellion, loss, and finding oneself...and it truly is a beautiful book...one which I wanted more than anything for the film to live up to.

I'll be honest. The movie wasn't awful. While Miley Cyrus maintained one facial expression the entire time and portrayed the emotional range of a bean, the rest of the cast, including Greg Kinnear and Liam Hemsworth did quite well. The story line involving Ronnie's father was well-played, and I'll admit, it brought a tear (or ten) to my eyes. A lot of the film ended up just being fluff though, especially because I don't think Miley Cyrus is able to carry such a powerful role yet. To all Miley fans: I'm sorry...but I maintain that!

All in all, this film is a mild tear-jerker, albeit very mild, and I give it a 3.5 out of 5. I'd recommend it to anyone who's a fan of Nicholas Sparks' works, and while it might not be the best film, it's definitely a date film. Below is the trailer.

  3. I agree with Stina. I'm expecting the movie to be awful, then I wouldn't feel too disappointed lol.

  4. You know, I really don't like Miley Cyrus and that is the sole reason I don't want to see this. Why couldn't they have gotten a better actress??

  5. Great review. I like Miley's singing voice but her regular voice sort of grates on my nerves.

Ohhh Melissa I laughed so hard at this, my professor stopped his lecture and stared at me. Hahahhaha! I liked the cross-out "slutty" too... which is funny but kinda disturbing, seeing as how she's not even legal yet.

Anyway, thanks for an honest review! You were quite generous :P

  8. Excellent review! I don't have high hopes for Miley Cyrus in this movie, so I can already agree with what you say. I probably won't end up seeing The Last Song - I haven't read the book and am not a huge fan of the plotline.

  9. Ooh! I was waiting for your review on the movie! I wrote my review for this last night..which took me like an hour :$
But anyway. I agree - the movie wasn't so bad. I liked it actually!! I want to watch it again...

And oh my, it brought tears to my eyes as well. At certain times in the theater, all was silent and then suddenly you can hear sniffling. Lol.

  12. I'm not a fan of Miley's acting either. Her voice is way too nasal-ly. If she fixed that, I imagine her singing would be stellar. I think I'll stick to reading the book sometime. I may rent to movie. 3.5 stars isn't bad. Thanks for the honest review.

  13. To be honest, I hate Miley's speaking and singing voice. And also to be honest, I heard her say in interviews that she did this role because she wanted to make a movie in which people would see her outside Hannah Montana, but she's not ready for a big leading role yet in my opinion. I don't think I'll watch it.

  14. Honestly I have not read the book and I'm most certainly not a Miley fan.

But I did see the movie, and I thought she did very well. I mean: go watch a hour of Hannah Montana & then this. I think people judge her to much on HM. She acts really bad on HM, but I think that is the character to. But in this movie, I thought she really did better. Yah she no Meryl or Johnny Dept, but she's definitely not bad. In my opinion.

  15. Am I the only person in the world who loves Miley Cyrus? How is it possible that she is so famous, then?
Anyhow, so jealous that you saw this! I can't wait, though it might not happen for a very long time.

  23. Blahahhahahaa Melissa! I snorted out loud with "maintained one facial expression the entire time and portrayed the emotional range of a bean."

I haven't seen the movie yet, but just seeing Miley in the trailer really irritated me, so I know I'm going to have a hard time sitting through the whole film. I hate the way she is pouting out her lips, it looks so fake!

When I read the book, I just couldn't picture her in the role. If anything, she should have been Blaze.

Great review. Thanks for being honest.
