Top Ten Book Endings That Left Me With My Mouth Hanging Open :

1. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - Holy Cliffhanger of Doom. If you haven't read this one yet, you're seriously missing out. Not only is the book phenomenally tense, but the cliffhanger was one I never even saw coming. And I'm dying. Seriously. Dying. I need book two. PLEASE!

2. Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles - Though when I finished this one, I really wanted a second book, I wish I hadn't wished so hard for one. While, yes, it was left with tons of questions and a cliffhanger ending, it would have been perfect had it not been spoiled by book two, in my humble opinion.

3. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins - Personally, I loved this book. I thought it was epic. The ending, however, was an epic letdown for me. Seriously? I was not expecting ribbons and bows, but I certainly got it...it was just a little unfulfilling, I guess.

4. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson - This one blew my mind because the ending was perfect. It wasn't overdone, but it wasn't underwhelming either. There was a sense of justice and peace. I felt good when I closed the book.

5. In My Father's House by Ann Rinaldi - Oscie Mason was headstrong and willful. She wasn't looking for love, and she certainly wasn't expecting it in the middle of the Civil War with her stepfather and she constantly at odds. But she found it...and it was denied? What? Hey...no fair!

6. Raw Blue by Kirsty Eagar - I had so many emotions when I finished that this book, that my mouth would have been hanging open either way. I felt satisfied with Carly and Ryan's story, but at the same time, I wanted more. I wasn't finished watching Carly grow stronger, or Ryan break down her walls.

7. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling - This book never fails to make me cry. For the record, I love all the books, but this one in particular was the changing of the tide in so many ways. I knew the story was getting darker, but this ending haunts me, and while it leads to the next book, I was still satisfied with how it ended...heartbroken, but satisfied.

8. Many Waters by Madeleine L'Engle - I know every list always has this on it, but it's one of my favourites. So, sue me. The ending of this one was sad, happy, heartbreaking, heartwarming and a million other things all at once. Did I love it? Heck yes. Did I wish it could have played out another way? Heck yes! Could it have worked another way? No, and that's why I love it every time.

9. Here Lies Bridget by Paige Harbison - Okay, maybe I'm not fair on this one because, frankly, I didn't like it, but still. Really? The ending was the epitome of everything fixing itself in about ten pages to create a happily ever after scenario. I might not like real life all the time, but it's more believable. This one didn't work for me, and the ending sealed the deal.

10. The Lying Game by Sara Shepard - This woman can write a cliffhanger. I loved the Pretty Little Liars series, but I think this one tops it, if I'm being honest. It consistently has me on my toes, and book one had me begging for book two right away.

  1. I love Ann Rinaldi! I haven't read her books in years and can't honestly remember if I've read that one, but she's rarely mentioned on the blogs.
I was shocked and disappointed with the ending of Mockingjay. Not shocked about the ending per se, but how it came about.

  3. I'm starting Mara Dyer right now and am sooo excited to see what all the fuss is about. Especially about this crazy cliffhanger ending everyone keeps talking about!

And I completely agree with you about The Lying Game's ending. So great. Still need to get my hands on book 2 though.

  4. my dear, I didn't get past number one because I so agree. I loved the book and cuddled with it. *sigh* the ending was intense and I also crave for book two. Who do I yell at demanding the next book. I mean calmly request bc I'm in love with the Noah, ah, the book.

I'm ready to pick up the finished copy and re-read just to see if there is more then was to be had in the arc.

  5. Of all the books The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is one I still cannot believe the ending. It was a real shocker and my only regret is that it will take a long time before I get to find out what is next.

  6. Oh my god, I so need to get my hands on a copy of Mara Dyer. EVERYONE is talking about the ending. Crazy!

Agreed about basically anything Sara Shepard writes...the woman knows how to write a cliffhanger!

  7. Epic let down on Mockingjay? I haven't read it yet (not ready to let go) but I will keep that in mind.

  9. I haven't read mist of this books but I agree with you about The order of the Phoenix. It's actually my favorite HP book, though it;s quite dark.
A lot of people are unhappy about the ending of Mockingjay. I'm not sure why? Sure I would have like if Katniss would have to go through all this pain but I always thought the ending (including epilogue) was quite fitting. a massive happy ending would have been out of place.

  10. I haven't read Mara Dyer yet, but it's showing up on a lot of people's lists. I'm too afraid of spoilers to read why, but I'll keep this in mind when I finally read it. And I loved Mockingjay, but I can understand why a lot of people don't.

  11. I saw the ending of Mockingay coming when I was about the halfway mark. It's still my favorite out of the three, but I can see why many were disappointed with it. I absolutely hate endings where everything is wrapped up, very forcefully I might add, at the end. Ugh!

  12. Haha, these left you with your mouth hanging open? I need to get some (I've only read Mockingjay) - especially Mara Dyer!

  13. MARA!!! *dies* I don't know if I can survive the wait for book 2. As much as I loved Ryan and Carly's story too, I would have been a happy camper with a few more chapters after she made that call. Hell, lets have a whole new book with them. That would be amazing:)

  14. Most of this list I have read but I so need to get the other ones! Nice list!

  15. Aww, I love the ending of Speak, too! Really, I just love everything about that book. So powerful.

  16. I think my jaw hit my chest it dropped down so far, at the end of Mara Dyer. I had to go back and reread that last part just to make sure I wasn't going crazy. That was intense!

  17. Ugh, Mara Dyer 2 needs to come out NOW! I completely agree with you on the cliffhanger of doom. :)

  18. I know, the ending of Mockingjay, biggest letdown ever.

  19. OMG! I am hearing so many amazing things about MARA that I dunno if I can wait for the March 2012 UK release! Should I just treat myself to a US hardback?!!

  20. Great list! Completely agree about Mara! I added Many Waters to my giant pile of books (actually to my bookcase cause I have 400+ bks to read here, a pile would certainly be SCARY!) because it seems to always be on your lists.

  21. What about the ending of Sweet Venom?? That was a huge cliffie. But really the one I'm thinking about since I haven't read Mara Dyer yet is Daughter of Smoke and Bone. There's a cliffie there. God I'd love to be Laini Taylor's brain!

  22. Definitely agree on numbers 3, 4, 7 and 10! HP5 always makes me cry too, it's such a dark, sad book. Especially when a certain character I adore ends up dying :(
