Bookish Feature: The Letter Q

Saturday, June 2, 2012

I'm always looking for a book that will make me feel something, and sometimes those books aren't fiction. Rather, they're real life, and they capture your heart in a raw, passionate, make-me-feel-something-deeper kind of way. The Letter Q is just that book. This powerful anthology promises to capture the heart of millions of readers, both young and old, looking for that true and special connection that comes when authors take the time to place themselves in the shoes of the reader and pour their heart onto the pages. Sold? So was I, and now I get to share this awesomeness with you!

If you received a letter from your older self, what do you think it would say? What do you wish it would say?

That the boy you were crushing on in History turns out to be gay too, and that you become boyfriends in college? That the bully who is making your life miserable will one day become so insignificant that you won't remember his name until he shows up at your book signing?

In this anthology, sixty-three award-winning authors such as Michael Cunningham, Amy Bloom, Jacqueline Woodson, Gregory Maguire, David Levithan, and Armistead Maupin make imaginative journeys into their pasts, telling their younger selves what they would have liked to know then about their lives as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgendered people. Through stories, in pictures, with bracing honesty, these are words of love and understanding, reasons to hold on for the better future ahead. They will tell you things about your favorite authors that you never knew before. And they will tell you about yourself.
In a world where bullying, peer violence and poor self-image are far too prevalent, I truly believe this is a must-read book for all. Regardless of your viewpoint, the powerful message of finding the truth in yourself, opening your heart and letting yourself be YOU can reach anyone willing to listen. I really want to read this book for two (related) reasons: I will soon be a teacher (middle school, hopefully) so, despite having attended multiple GLBT panels, I think the better understanding I have about how bullying takes place, especially in my classroom, the better I will be as an advocate for my students. Also, I think this would be a great book to have on my classroom bookshelf for my students to access.

  2. I can't wait until we get this book in at my library. I'm so glad that there are books like this now at least. :)

  3. I work with high school students and every class seems to have a "token gay" who gets whispered about. This book would be a good resource to have available to them. (After one student ate a stick of butter upon dares from his classmates, I told him about BUTTER by Erin Jade Lange releasing this fall and he said, "Wow, I need to get this book.")

The video made me tear up a little. I was not a popular kid in High School and it was a very hard time in my life. I can't wait to read this because it has the potential to change some lives and make them much more bearable.

  5. I've heard a lot about this book and love the strength and message it has within. Growing up in a largely conservative town, I witnessed a lot of hate and prejudice toward the LGBT community and absolutely hated it - it's one of the few "causes" (for lack of a better word) I stand against very publicly and very loudly. More than that though, I was definitely an awkward, fat kid growing up and felt so burdened by it, like my world would crumble any second. I love that this book is about those who have made it past, those that went through the struggles and can look back on it and know that You is a You to be proud of, just as You are. I'd be honored to read it and spread its message.
