This week's question: Who are your all-time favourite male and female characters?

Ahhh yes, the age-old question. A good friend asked me who my favourite all-time characters were, and it got me to thinking. See, the problem is that there are SO many characters in the genres I read that have characters that resonate on different levels, you know? I think it’s impossible and completely untrue for me to say that I have one true favourite for both male and female characters, but that said, I definitely have those that continue to stay with me long after I’ve finished a book or series, so I decided that I’d tell you my two (read: current) all-time favourites.

Sirius Black played such an important role in the Harry Potter series, though his role was far too fleeting for my liking. No, he’s not the youngest, or the hottest, or even the smartest, most likely, but there is something about his character that stays with me, no matter what book I pick up next. He’s an unlikely hero with a clouded past, but he resonates familial love, true courage and a depth of personality that doesn’t often appear for characters that don’t in a long series for a long period of time. No, he may not have played a role continuously through the series in terms of face-time, but his personality, spirit and heart remained long past his exit.

Annabeth from the Percy Jackson series wasn’t your typical female MC from the first second she entered the series. She’s strong and resourceful, she has no desire to be coddled in any way, shape or form, and she most certainly doesn’t want a boy to take care of her. She’s got this hardened exterior because of how she was raised, but inside, she’s just a teenage girl with the same angst as every teen. There are little hints of angst that appear now and again, but they’re peppered and punctuated by her sassy attitude and no-holds-barred demeanor. Most of all though, Annabeth doesn’t want to fit in. She’s special, and she will try her damndest to stand out.

Obviously, there are a ton of fantastic characters out there. To name just a few of my other favourites – Mr. Darcy from Pride & Prejudice, Hagrid from Harry Potter, Anna from My Sister's Keeper, Lloyd & Sam from The Long Weekend, Jo from Little Women and far too many others to name. So what about you? Do you have all-time favourite male & female characters?

  5. Oh agreed! I loved Sirius. The movies made me forget just how amazing his character was written. I had so hoped Harry would end up living with him at some point.

  7. All of the those characters are great!! Anabeth is pretty badass, I wouldn't mind being her! Some other badass characters are Calla from Nightshade, if you haven't read it yet, you'll totally know what I mean. She's a warrior. Another one is Violet from The Body Finder, she doesn't scare easily! I also like Jacinda from Firelight, because she's so innocent and has only good intentions but bad things always seem to happen to her! Obviously the boys in these books are my favorite, too!

  10. I love those characters you picked!!

I think one of my favorite male characters has to be Henry Detamble from The Time Travelers Wife...something about him was so sexy.

My fav female character is Jane Eyre- she was smart, young and confident.

  12. Ah I love Sirius! He is definitely one of my very favorite HP characters. I haven't read the Percy Jackson books so I don't know about Annabeth, but if you are a fan of her, I'm sure I will be as well:)

  14. I like that you mentioned Sirius. He didn't have a lot of page time, but he was such a developed and complex character. In a lot of ways he was very tragic. His life was one sadness after another but he never stopped fighting for the people he cared about. I wish he had met a better end.

  15. Well, you've got me curious because I haven't 'met' your top characters yet.

If you asked me right now about mine, I'd say Thomas Mackee from The Piper's Son. I'd put him in the unlikely hero category though his heroism is a different kind.

Female character? Hmmm... I have to think on that. I think you can't go wrong with Amelia Bedelia. or maybe Bathsheba or... Oh! Lily Bart, but her story was tragic because she truly gave up.

  16. totally cool that you picked Annabeth. People don't really talk about her but I loved her, she was just so kick ass. I loved how she wouldn't back down and how she refused to fit into whatever people expected of her. Great post Melissa!

  17. Great question Melissa! I gotta agree with you- I love Mr. Darcy. As for "Percy Jackson"/ Annabeth? Well, I have only seen the movie but I loved it (I will add the book series to my TBR list). I really, really, really love Jay Heaton from Kimberly Derting's "Body Finder" series- he is just such a sweetheart... As for girls? I really love the girls of Meg Cabot's various series like Suze and Jess, they are pretty kick-ass in my opinion!

  20. I think I like characters that can expand their wisdom from where we first met them. I also like strong female characters. Often with inner strength in the face of people telling them "can't". :) Oh and of course a sexy alpha male doesn't hurt either. :D

  25. Sirius Black is, quite possibly, one of my all-time favorite characters of ALL TIME. And I would totally argue that he's really hot actually, because I really think he must have been LOL. :D And Annabeth is so kick-ass. Love her.
